My fiance recently found a knife in a house he was tearing down. He says it is one that would mount on a rifle. The knife has a case and a lot of markings and stamps. On the blade of the knife is engraved:
Mre d' Armes de St Etreme 9cfil 1881 - this is as close as we can tell, it is fancy writing. Does anyone have any information as to what the words mean and the era of the knife or any general information?

Thank you,

Bridget

You should put this question at "The Bernard Levine Knife Collecting and Identification Forum", you have more chances to find an answer there.

I looked a bit on the web and Did find hits for the Mre d' Armes. I assume it is a french arms company but could be wrong about this. The hits I found were all in french except for 1 this is the url http://perso.wanadoo.fr/christian.mery/fauxcopie.htm#Contents and did find a picture of a bayonet but it was an 1892. I found nothing on an 1881. There is an email addy there maybe they can help you.

Manufacture d'Armes de St. Etienne in France
is probably a hit.
Keep checking for that
