Looking for input on a sheath for the BK9 which is now en route!

Ordered the 9 from Tomars along with some sweet micarta and I think I'm going the kydex route with it as they seem about 1/2 the price of leather. All I know so far is I want a pancake. Not sure if I should add anything to it. Maybe some molle locks?

I'd like to see some Beckerhead BK9 setups too if possible!

MOLLE locks look like a viable option, but it depends entirely on how you want to carry it... Do you want it across the small of your back Scout style? Or maybe on a chest rig/backpack strap ranger style? Have you seen the various baldric rigs that people tried to figure out? Do you want cross draw? How about an ankle rig?

It all depends on what you have to carry it with and how you want to carry it.

I think on the BK9 ,I would go with a Taco style Kydex to keep the all up weight down and make it more compact..

I also would not write off the factory sheath unitl you've messed with it a bit..;)

Unless you are going to strictly belt carry, the factory sheath is pretty good for strapping on a pack or in a pack or with a baldric strap etc....

The unit is plenty strong enough and best of all is pretty light weight. I like nice sheaths as much as anyone, but for shear utility I cannot think of anything really lacking in the factory sheath.

Just using the factory sheath, you can make a veritable "workshop"out of a BK9 rig .. The front accessible pouch can hold a lot of gear-mine has a Ceramic Sharpening rod, two Diamond sharpening cards, a 3/8" ferro rod, bank line, repair needle, fish hooks and a Leatherman Juice multi tool. You can also add a little Remora in the added sheath slot.

With a lightweight Folding bucksaw, I can process about anything in the woods with that rig for the same all up weigh as one Forest axe.

You are already in the best online market for custom kydex BK&T sheaths. I won't name names so as not to exclude anyone or take away from someone's business, but rest assured this is the place to look around (check craftsman/service provider sigs that post here, if they bend kydex odds are they have a link to the info on it in their sig).

Also, to echo Jim, I don't have any issues with my factory sheath, especially because the 9 isn't the knife I'm going to have on my waist if I'm doing long day hikes/backpacking where comfort of carry would be an issue, it would just be a bit too cumbersome for extended aerobic activity, in which case the 9 get's tied to/slipped into the pack, which the factory sheath accommodates just fine.

I'll name names.

GODSPEED TACTICAL!!

I should have a pancake BK7 Dangler with BK14 in offset piggyback arriving any time now (14 with handles should be here today). I almost got it for the BK9, but I already have a good leather sheath for it. His work is top shelf, and has some of the best prices I have seen on comperable kydex makers. He can make it any way you want...pancake, taco, ESEE setup, dangler, baldric, you name it. He will also (like a few others) do work in exchange for knives too. I know you didn't mention machetes, but he's one of the few people I've seen doing custom machete kydex.

Leather is great for 9's though too, and I have a great Nix Leather one. Skystorm makes some pimp stuff as well...when I get around to getting leather pants for my customized Potbelly, I've already decided thats who I'll go to this time.

Might want to give 'ole Godspeed or Azwelke a ring, their stuff is pretty sweet.

Ok, since it's out there, Godspeed!'s work is pretty boss. I have one of his sheaths for my 14 and it is freakin awesome quality work.

Plus 1 for Godspeed, Eli does some really nice kydex work, I have a few of his sheaths and am happy with them all!

Thanks for the recommendations!
Here is some of my work :)
If I can help you, please email me at azwelke@aol.com
Thanks,
AL

I just got it today! I would take pics but the light is fading and they would look like sh%t. :D

Al, thanks for the pics! It's between you and Eli. ;) I have a BK14 sheath by you already, only problem is it doesn't quite fit with the zytel handles.

I'm going to carry around the 9 in the stock sheath and beat on it a bit before deciding. A dangler piggyback sounds nice.

Either way, send me your address again, and I will get you a new BK14 sheath sent out so it fits the scales better.

Thanks again,
Al

Thanks for the offer, but you really don't have to. :) This sheath was made before the zytel ever came out, so I knew it wouldn't fit when I got them.

I couldn't be more happy with my Azwelke BK9 sheath. Its perfect for me.

I have been experimenting with a 2 Tek Lok scout carry that I really like. I wanted a way to carry on the left side so I could keep my handgun on the right side. They also mount to my pack pretty well without moving them.
