factory micarta, G10, and a shoe-lace wrap:
I didn't bother with precise measurements but you can see that the G10 tapers from ~1/4" at the pommel to 1/8" at the guard, is also rounded/contoured, whereas the basic micarta slabs are a flat ~3/16" with rounded edges. A cord wrap is as thick or thin as desired (depending on cord and wrap-style). Among myself, wife, and kids of various ages under 10, the G10 is most comfortable for actual use (fills hand better) with the cord a close 2nd-place (covers the entire handle, can be more discreet than thick scales, depending on cord-choice), while none of us like the basic slabs that are just kinda there.
