Looking for Kelly or High Quality Axe

My father in law chops down trees and splits logs. He's looking for a kelly axe or something of similar quality. I do not know a lot about chopping down trees so bare with me. He said it MUST NOT be foreign cheap metal or handle. He mentioned a few types of wood on the fly but i forgot them. I only do remember him saying cedar is not his first choice.

Also is hand forged steel still an option? I know its probably a long shot.

Is there anywhere I can find a Kelly axe in good condition or something of similar quality ?

I figured this was the place to go. Thanks in advance for your time.

I would just read through the "what did you rehang today" thread. Most of us only hang good quality axes. Plus you'll often see a description of the particular characteristics of the axe mentioned as well as length of handle. But I'm sure you'll get lots of specific recommendations too. Good luck and merry Christmas!

There is a fellow on these forums named jblyttle who finds an enormous quantity of axes and sells them. You might send him a message. And I think he has an ebay page.

General rules for choosing a good vintage axe are to find one of a known quality maker. It should have convex cheeks, a heel and toe that aren't overly worn and a poll that hasn't been heavily battered and mushroomed. Kelly/True Temper is a great brand but there are many other that also fit the bill.

If you want a new american made axe, ready to go, check out Council tools, they have good axes for good prices and their velvicut line is very nice but is more expensive.

otherwise, your best bet is the big auction site. Sounds like he would be happy with a Kelly, so type in kelly axe and let your father in law pick out the one that looks like it will suit his needs. there is actually quite a bit of variation in axe shapes and sizes, and his use will dictate the particulars of the axe. you may be able to find one with a good handle still on it - or if not you 'll just need to rehandle a head, which is part of the fun.

What he said

Ebay, type in seller jblyttle.:thumbsup: straight forward, and fair, a very knowledgeable axe guy.

Kelly, Plumb, Collins. The 3 Musketeers of American Axe Makers...hard to go wrong with either - 1960's and older.
Many models and patterns with each maker, as well as the many hardware store lines they would each have manufactured nation wide.
Some say it's a passion. Some of our wives might say it's an obsession...:D:D

Welcome and Merry Christmas:cool:
