I am looking to commission a purpose built custom knife. I have a friend who makes knives and he has made two of them for me. I'm wanting him to build me a large knife to use for sticking wild hogs. I want to give him some direction so I'm looking for ideas that I can give him for a start.

Does anybody know of an online reference where I could see a bunch of silhouettes for larger knives that I could look through and get some ideas?

Thanks for all your ideas.

I hope my friend Ryan Weeks doesn't mind me borrowing his photo. This is one that he made.

The bottom one in this pic is one of my designs made by JK Handmade knives. I think it would do nicely.

Look for the "Best Bowie" threads. Drool over the damascus, walrus, etc, but pay attention to the blade shapes, guard configurations, handle shapes.

In my experience you do not need a blade that is excessively long

I love my 10 + inch Bowie style blades but I think especially if your hunting with dogs a blade that is 7 to 8 inches is a good hog knife and easy to move with

I do like a guard on a knife designed for sticking

Something like this would do nicely

The Randall 13-12 is a pretty good design too. 12 inches of 1/4 inch steel.

I think a look through the gallery thread would be a good start. There is a wealth of great designs there.
