i've been looking to buy a knife for a friend of mine who does a lot of hunting and is just getting started in taxidermy. would preferably like to find a good folder, have been looking at the Spyderco Pro-Grip SS, but am open to any suggestions. Would like to keep the price under $200.

Is the choice of a folder based on your preference or his? I only ask because I find a 3" or so fixed blade to be ideal for whitetail deer and other game animals. They're much easier to clean off and more reliable. That's just my preference of course. For a fixed blade I would recommend a Blackjack Small. I used one this year to clean out a big whitetail buck I shot and it performed beautifully. It was also used to assist in skinning. For a folder, I'd recommend the Spyderco Impala. I got to use one of these on a pass-around recently, it's a sturdy and of course very sharp knife. They even make one with a guthook.

Id recommend the impala with guthook also. Id also say look at the kershaw Blur. Its red with handle inserts of non slip material, Im pretty sure even when it got slippery from blood that the inserts would still allow you to have good grip on the knife.

I think with that price range, you should also look into a custom/semi custom. There's lot of nice hunters in the exchange forum here if you take a look, and most are under $200.
I also think it would be impossible to go wrong with something from Bob Dozier or the late Rob Simonich's Mid Tech line up( I beleive everything has worked out so that the company will stay in business, right guys?)

thanks for the input guys! Matt, a visit to the Dozier page was a good idea. does anyone else have a favorite custom maker?

Fixed blade - Dozier for sure, his D2 is incredible and his outdoor knives are very well suited for cleaning game. Almost any of them would be good for your stated purpose.

In a folder I would go for the Benchmade 721 (or 720), the blade profile is great for cleaning game and you're getting your friend a rock solid knife for around $100.

I vote for the Dozier also. Once the recipient sees how excellent it is and then finds out it's a custom, he'll be blown away at the gift. Dozer's whole package, from the knife to the sheath, is exceptionally high-quality for a reasonable cost. I think AG Russell has a selection in stock for a quick turn-around in getting it.
