Looking for knife "LIKE" the Nazi SS dagger...

Help?
I'm trying to find a knife of the same pattern as the famous SS Dress daggers. It's a very old design, dating back to somewhere around 1100 or 1200 A.D. and still popular well into the 1600s and I'd like one for my period collection.
If nothing else is available, I'd be willing to buy a QUALITY replica of the SS type dagger and re-build without the Nazi markings, but it must be a decent quality blade or it's useless to me.

Any help at all is appreciated, thanks!

Your confusing the nco'S dagger with the officers dagger I think. Big difference in the two. The officers is slim where the nco's is much sturdier and imposing. Run a search on Militaria, Nazi in a good search engine and you'll find a wealth of info.

Great link, thanks!
But as I said, either a repro or one built without markings. While I don't collect Nazi Memorabilia, I wouldn't want to destroy the collector's value of even a bad condition blade.(price and deep blade engraving make this impractical anyway.)

I didn't see a copy of the NCO dagger, but the one I'm thinking of is the stereotypical SS/SA dagger, referred to on that site as a "Chain Dagger."

Price may not be that much of an option, as if needs be, I may well contact a custom maker about building exactly what I want. I'd rather not go that pricy though.

Esav,
I wasn't sure if this was referred to as the "Holbein" pattern or not, but I do recognize the name as being correct to the time period in question. (1630s)

I'm not having any luck getting into A.G.'s site right now either, he must be having some problems, but I'll keep checking back. Thanks for the lead!

Anyone else know of anyplace?

Ye GODS Esav!
LOL
Yes, "Holbein" is definitely what I'm looking for, but uhm... for that price I could probably get one of the better makers around here to make me two or three of them! LOL!

I'm not looking for something that's going to set up on a shelf and collect dust, this is something that's going to be out in the weather, cutting and gutting and everything in between. I need a real USER blade!
Thanks for the link though, that's a very pretty knife and I now know for sure exactly what to call what I'm looking for.

I went looking for a user Holbein dagger a couple of years ago, but unfortunately couldn't find much. It seemed like everything I saw was decorative. The big makers of historical arms just don't make many of them I guess.

I just came across a Holbein dagger here though:

It's a couple of pages into the "daggers" section and it's called the "Swiss Dagger".

Museum Replicas doesn't have a fantastic reputation for quality, but it might be useable.

Thanks Cerulean, (Down south we'd just call you "Blue")

Looks like that may be the one I have to go with.

In 1991 the Swiss celebrated 700 years of the Swiss Confederation (1291/1991) with this wonderful rendition of the “Holbein” dagger. 700 sets were made. Since the time that they were created, they have been declared illegal in Switzerland and can no longer be sold there.
Damn, that's sad. So much for their reputation. Are they going to take away the rifles and give everyone broom-sticks?

Ken, here is a basic holbein dagger, hand made for about $116.25 + shipping from the Czech Republic. I have read good things about Lutel's swords, but nothing about their daggers. Since I paid $70 for a PAul Chen Hanwei seax knife last spring, I think that the price is reasonable. Take a look at the pictures and see what you think. They are not exactly the versions that the NAZIs used, they appear to be a bit less elaborate, but I actualy think that they would be better user blades. I, personally, like the simpler appearance. Go to the Dagger page and they are nos. 1022 & 1023.

Glad to help. Keep us posted on your experience with Lutel. As I said, I have read good things of their swords and of their service.

You know, I was looking at Lutel's dagger page and I saw their No. 10005, the French 13th Century dagger, and it is a spitting image of a mid-19th Century American Bowie Knife, or I am not Hugh Fuller. What do you guys think. It has an 11 3/8" blade and sells for 4000CZK, which converts to $108.11 at their rate of $1 = 37 CZK or $99.85 at the current rate of $1 = 40.07 CZK. In either case, a Hell of a price for a hand made knife if it is of any quality.

God, Ken, I got my latest Museum Replicas catalogue and I can clearly advise you to buy the ones from Lutel, especially since MR wants $129 + shipping for their's.

Hey Hugh,
I think I will go with the Lutel, but as it turns out, I'm strapped for play money at the moment. As soon as I get some discretionary "blade cash" in hand, I'm going to place an order.
I'll let you know how things go and maybe I can find a bud with a digital camera to post a pic.
IMHO, the MRL doesn't look anywhere as nice as the Lutel anyway.

Thanks again.

I ordered a couple of daggers from them, and received them yesterday. Very good stuff.
