Looking for knife to mount on my PFD

Hi everyone,

I am an avid outdoorsmen and I spend a lot of time out in the canoe, fishing and paddling the backwoods. I just bought a new PFD and it has a mounting spot for accessories such as a knife.

I have seen a few options but nothing that has caught my eye. I don't just want to clip any old knife on. I would prefer something made to mount on a PFD.

An example would be this:

Are there any other options I am missing here? I know that the folks here are the ones to talk to about this, so I look forward to what you all have to say!

thanks for your input and time!

Lol I mount my flashlight in a holster on my waste normally, however with this new PFD, I have a few points that I can fiddle around with and find the best place to keep one. For the most part, if I am night-paddling I'll keep a head lamp on my head and a long-range 'throwier' light at my waist for spotting the shorelines and portages.

This is the PFD I picked up. Great ratings, and you can't lose with MEC!

It is the MEC fulcrum WW. I got the white water version because it was basically the same as the normal fulcrum but had the extra mounting points for accessories, but mainly because it was the only one they had left in my size lol.

Right on man.
I'm curious to see what the knife suggestions will be...
Maybe try posting it in the outdoors section?

The Benchmade 110H2O is PFD compatible. I actually bought it as a PFD knife for kayaking, but i ended dropping the kayak fishing and got into spearfishing instead.

The BM is my spearfishing back-up knife. Its mounted on my weight-belt. Its ok for my uses as a back-up knife, albeit its a bit too small for my large neoprene gloveed hands. The N680 steel is very corrosion resistant and i havent had any rust problems with mine.

If you have any questions fire away.

You could have a sheath made for just about anything you took a fancy to, and it looks like that PFD is almost MOLLE compatible.

I'd definitely recommend something that CANNOT rust. Not stainless.

H1 Spydercos come to mind, as do the Mission Ti knives. How much do you want to spend?

The Spyderco Caspian Salt H1 makes an excellent PFD attached knife. They are discontinued but available in the secondary market.

I'm a ten year raft guide on the Arkansas and have rafted both whitewater and floats all over the states. I really like my Astral Norge as far as PFDs go. I put my river knife on the side, inverted attached to the bottom piece of webbing used to cinch down the fit. I use a Benchmade rescue hook "8" on the left (strong side cross draw) and a CRKT Neckolas on the right. The prob is that most river knives are pure junk and the sheaths are worse. These two are the best two Ive found over the years.

Gerber River Shorty. Ive had one on my PFD for yrs. Cuts line, food prep, open clams, short prybar etc. A lot of people dont like Gerber but this one is a well thought out, well made design. Good retention on the sheath too.--KV

Good call and I'm not one that particularly fond of Gerbers! A buddy I have kayak fished with has one and it is a nice design & size plus it's cheap. I prefer my Caspian but if I was looking at buying a replacement now and with the Caspian street price at about 3-5 times higher I would strongly consider the Shorty.

CHeck river city sheaths, mike sastre....as you yank the spyderco from it it opens..one hand

The last time I went on a guided raft tour, the guide had that exact knife strapped to his PFD.

I don't do much rafting, but do kayak and jet ski and clip a Spyderco Salt into a pocket of my vest. Spyderco also makes a fixed blade version that would suit your needs, I think. Click on the link under my name and you can scroll down to Spyderco Salt for a review and photos.

Definitely stay away from NRS. I can't tell you how many guides I've known/met/seen wearing an NRS knifeless sheath on their PFD.

Thanks for the input everyone! Greatly appreciated!

I REALLY want a spyderco caspian 2 with a blunt end however 1) I can't find one 2) They are mega pricey

I love the benchmade! In yellow with partial serration sounds just about perfect.

I'll keep browsing for kershaw river shorties but I know I'll have to worry about corrosion a bit more than the other options.

Thanks again everone
