Looking for Morel mushrooms

Checked a burn for morels and it's just a wee bit too early.

The only mushrooms you'll find around here are growing on pigeon shit.

That reminds me of when I was 13-14 and running around with a .410 shotgun. I had a 3 incher in there ?, can't remember. Anyway, I came around a bush and there was a flock of pigeons picking corn out of field spread cow manure. I let fly and I swear that 4-5 were flopping around after the bang. It shocked the hell out of me because it was just a .410, must have just got the concentration of them as they lifted. I cooked them and ate the meat. It was like chicken but grayish\white. I'd eat country pigeon again no prob. :thumbup: I know, I know, I've heard them called flying rats, shit hawks etc.

I found a couple morels around where I live a couple weekends ago, there weren't many or they had been picked up for the most part. I was in state land, so there's plenty of people that go through there. The handful I did find were delicious fried in some butter.

(I brought my Bark River Northstar Companion, I figured maybe a bk-7 is a little overkill for gathering 'shrooms, heh)

I did that for years with my wife's family in Michigan. I remember the first time they took me out...once you have the eye for them they are easy to spot, but I remember it took a bit to "see" them. Great memories!
