Looking for my first Busse!

So I've been lurking here for a few days. I spend tons of time over at a guitar forum, and decided to look for a good knife forum, since I've satisfied my guitar gear cravings and need a new obsession to keep my bank account from getting too bloated.

I want to make sure that what I think I have learned is correct, and I have some questions as well.

1. These knives are not available through any 3rd party retailers?

2. They appear to only available directly from Busse 2-3 models at a time, any other model has to be found aftermarket?

3. There is some sort of ganza thing which appears to be akin to a lottery event? Somewhat confusing, what comes to mind is like what some small guitar builders do, people put in for the lottery and if you get picked, you get to be in line to have your guitar built. Similar thing going on here?

4. They appear to fill a significant number of military orders, which civilians only can get aftermarket. I am getting commissioned in May and going Active Duty Infantry...are these military orders done by individuals, or at the unit level, are they done constantly or is it a more rare occasion....how do I tap into that, assuming I can?

5. I'm looking for 2 knives. A 3-4 inch general utility knife, something that doesn't call attention to itself and look like a penile compensation piece haha, and also a 5.5-7 inch heavy duty knife. Right now the two models that I have been drawn to are the Hell Razor or ASH, and the active duty, what are some other good options? Something that will fit into a readily available, high quality MOLLE compatible sheath without drastic alterations.

Thanks everyone, and I love some of the pics people put up here, some sweet looking pieces.

EDIT: Also add the Satin Jack to the 'interested in' list, I saw one on ebay, looks nice

Sounds like you are already on the right track. You pretty much answered your own question #5 ;)

The AD and the HR are superb choices. They would make a awesome combo. The AD is probably my favorite from the smaller Busse category.

The SFNO, ASH1, NO-E, ZTNO, SH-E, SJTAC, and BATAC (smaller side) would also fit in the 5.5-7" blade category.

You're pretty much on the right track. In addition to the AD, I would seriously consider a Game Warden. Those are nice little knives right there, and right now, easy to get from the Busse Company Store.

Elen brings up a good point. The GW is still currently available at the BCS at really good prices. The GW is also a nice little knife. I actually prefer the GW handle a bit more because the handle is shorter which means less excess handle protruding from my small hands.

I have been deployed for the last 12 months in Iraq. Thi sis my 2nd tour. I am a knife addict as well. Firstly I will say Busses are built like tanks. Since you are going to be an Infantry officer you will have a great need for such kit. I would suggest a BATAC and either an active duty or MS for the smaller fixed blade. The key to knives for us service members is making them conpatible with the type of gear you wear. For me on this deployment I had the luxury of basicilly wearing whatever i wanted to wear. I would suggest getting a BATAC and having a nice kydex sheath made for it and get all the bells and whistles for it. That way you can have the option to wear it on a drop leg put it on MOLLE type gear or stuff it in an assault pack. For the smaller fixed blade I would do the same but not get all the options. If you show up to your new platoon with a big fixed blade they will proably laugh, (I wouldnt but again I am a knife nut) a BATAC is a good solution, not to big not to small. If you can find an OD model one here on the BF that would be great, it really matches our ACU's and ACU color gear well. Good luck and keep in touch.

Great info, thanks!

+1 on not bringing really high profile/visible gear/gadgets when you show up anywhere for the first time. I've done that a couple times during ROTC hahaha, brought a camelbak, and a Benchmade nimravus to my first lab here at school...brought my own mountaineering boots, ski goggles, and ice pick to mountain warfare school...learned that it is a good idea to keep it low profile with stuff like that if you want to avoid being given a hard time. Not a huge deal if you have thick skin, but it can give of the wrong impression.

Hopefully I will find out my first duty station soon, should be 1-2 months from now, so I get in touch with people there, find out what battalions/companies have slots for LTs, and when they are scheduled to deploy. With that information, I can predict what specific unit I'll be headed to, and then contact the CO there and figure out what kind of equipment they have, and anything he might advise purchasing before I show up etc.

i have been very happy with my game wardens, and more recently my cultellus for edc.

the active/heavy duties or leaner/meaners are also exellent choices.

for the larger blade, you really cant go wrong with either the ash or batac.

well i am 14 and the first thing that comes to mind when you say"commissioned in May and going Active Duty Infantry" is combat, and if you are going to use the small fixed blade for combat i would recomend the AD. my favorit knife is the GW, but with the wider blade, it dosn't have as much penetration power than the AD.

If you dont want it for combat GET THE GW, or at least look into it.

I dont know if you already know but heres a great web site to go tohttp://www.bussecollector.com

EDIT: I just ordered a CG BA TAC. if I dont like it or dosn't fit my needs and dicide to sell it i would be happy to sell you it. I would love to know my knife is helping our country.

Welcome to Busse! :D

All good advice here - the ASH1 / AD would be a great combo, as would others. Good luck in your commission.

Oh, and if you don't succeed with Busse Knives in de-bloating your bank account enough, give me a call. I'll help all I can.

Well I actually found out I'll be heading to Ft. Drum, with the 10th Mountain Division as my first duty station. No more details than that, but its good enough for me. It was my second choice after Hawaii, with the 25ID, and I really, really badly wanted to go light infantry (I do NOT like vehicle maintenance!), so I'm thrilled.

Got an eBay auction ending soon, if I get my reserve I should be able to get a knife or two, a camera to take pics of them, and a new iPod...damn things are too delicate for my touch. Much to look forward too, and thanks for all the good suggestions!
