I'm again looking for my first custom. A few months ago I was looking to get a custom, but there was just too much out there for me. I'm still looking for one, but not sure who to go with. I'm a lefty looking for a folder. I've been looking at:
Larry Chew
Allen Elishewitz
Tom Mayo
and a few others.

What was you first knife?

Thanks,
Mitch

Mitch:
You cant go wrong with Elishewitz or Chew I have no experance with Mr Mayo's work as of yet.
Last time I checked both Elishewitz and Chew had a lead time of about 6 mos but they are well worth the wait, but if you cant wait you might try Robertsons Custom Cutlery he carrys both makers work and might have what you want in stock.

First custom I ordered was a JSP Jashido Compact. My 3 years is _almost_ up...

The first one I received was a Bud Nealy cocobolo and damascus pesh kabz.

Mitch,

What properties and qualities are you looking for? Utility, art, hard field use, light office duty? How deep are your pockets ($$$)?

These are a few basic questions to ask to narrow a field which includes so many great makers. For a practical "using" custom, Kit Carson certainlly has my vote and his prices relative to what you get are certainly a good deal in my book. Darrel Ralph offers a very good knife if you want something "dress'ier" with any of the various models he offers.

Stay Sharp,
Sid

Although increasingly hard to acquire, I have to agree that Carson knives are still the best value. I have two and they are excellent knives. Darrel Ralph also makes an excellent knife. The Apogee is awesome.

Take a look at the Model 4 Carson. You will not be disappointed.

Elishewitz is making some excellent knives and they are not all that expensive for customs. His integral locks and bolster locks are great.

Take a look at Knifeart.com and arizonacustomknives.com, both sites have great photos and both are good dealers.

Hope this helps,

Daniel

I would definitely recommend a Bolster Lock by Allen Elishewitz. It is a great design concept, and well executed. It allows the safety and reliability of the Integral lock with the materiel variety allowed by most other lock types.

I would like to jump in he thread too. and woudl ike yoru opinions. I wish I could buy both but I thikn my resistance is stronger when it comes to folders (I have no self control when it comes to balisongs though

)

so the question is that shoudl I get a customKFF model 2 or an ELish Phantom. I am surprised UW didn't include Pat crawford in the list.. or maybe he was breaking away from the flow?

Carson is by far my number #1 sugestion as faras a first time folder. I own many and love them all. Good luck

UW Mitch...

First custom/handmade folder I bought was from Mr. Wayne Clark of Santa Fe Springs, CA. You can see some of his work at Les's website. Smooth stuff. First saw his work at a knife shop in a mall; the owner had one clipped to his pocket. Showed it to me, let me play with some of the models he had for sale. Two YEARS later, when I could afford to buy it, I contacted the shop, who gave me his number, and I had my first custom in my hand a couple of weeks later. Yippee!!

Also try Mr. Pat Crawford and his son Wes. Very nice guys, and very nice knives. I had the chance to meet Pat at a knife show and had a pleasant conversation with him. He told me all these little details regarding my new KFF...

For the best custom experience, talk as much as possible to the maker. Little details such as filework, blasting, clip position, etc. make the knife yours as opposed to a 'production' knife.

When you want a fixed blade, you won't go wrong with Jerry Hossom at www.hossom.com Now there's truly a custom maker!

Jerry Hossom is DA MAN!! nice guy who will make your knife YOURS. not some production that someone else has.. and I am not talking about adding some filework and wow you've got yoru custom knife.. he'll step with you all the way. But don't bother him too much now cause I am trying to design somethign with him

seriously though whe I saw his work.. it was like. .you know..love and such. I felt right. Oh btw he specializes in fixed bad boys who cater to his filipino martial arts friends.
