Looking for my First Fixed Blade

I'm thinking of getting a fixed blade, as I don't have any. I don't want the most expensive knife out there, but something in the $150ish range would probably be my limit. Something in the 8"OAL range. It will see time camping and backpacking, but will likely spend most of its time helping out in the kitchen, so I'm looking for something to cross over pretty easily. I would prefer something with a handle material other than FRN as well. Right now, the knives on the list are a Grohmann#3, flat grind, a Myerchin and a RAT-3. **A bit out of the price-range, but I'm also slightly considering a CRK Mounatineer as well.**
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I would reccomend that you check out Cold Steel's 2007 Christmas sale for the Carbon V closeouts. They have the Laredo Bowie, SRK, Recon Tanto and LTC Kukri. I have found this steel to hold its edge extremely well and be pretty tough at the same time.

Gotta suggest "Bark River Knife & Tool", Look into a "Mini North Star." Just ordered mine after doing a ton of home work on the matter. Check'em out! M

The Mini North Star was one I looked at immediately, but I kept on going back to the Black Water boot knife...over and over. Something about it just struck me. I know it's quite a bit smaller than what I was looking at, but it was like the dog at the animal shelter that picks you, not the other way around...So, I've got one coming my way:D!
At that very reasonable price, I'll get to know if something else from Bark River is for me AND it's coming with two sheaths:D:D
Thanks very much Scott Dog ,for steering me in that direction and thanks to those whom helped out:thumbup:

Baby steps with this fixed blade thing, baby steps...

I have a Bark River Northstar, which is a great knife. For kitchen use too, you might consider a Bark River Lil Nessy (which I want to get) or Canadian Special. Both are comparable to the Grohmann in size and the fact that the blades are broader and have some belly to them for easier slicing.
