I have seen a lot of people talking about their gateway knives.
The more I think about it I think the Gerber 400 was really that
knife for me. I was eight when I started carrying it. It was just
the right size for my little hands, it had a pocket clip like Dad's
Spyderco and I could pinch it open one handed VERY fast. At
nine people would ask me to close it and open it again just
to prove I was that fast with it and they didn't imagine it.

I carried that knife for years.
I carried it EVERYWHERE. Including school. I'm still not sure
if the teachers didn't know I had the knife, or if they just
choose not to say anything because they knew my situation.
I like to think I was a lot more mature than most kids my age
were. Didn't have much of a choice. lol.
My Dad was a single father and worked a lot of hours at the
local paper mill as an electrical engineer. Sixty to eighty hours
a week for a long time.
The teachers knew I had to ride my bike about four miles to get to
school every morning, then again after school to get home,
and took care of my little brother(who was three) in the afternoons.
If they didn't know I had it, that's because I kept it
put up unless I needed it and understood even then that acting like
an idiot with my knife was a bad idea.
Anyway, point is, I have no idea what happened to that knife. It was the older
version. Gerber roll stamped on one side of the tang and 400 on the other IIRC.
Stonewash type finish with no markings on the blade. It had a lanyard hole, but
it also came with a pocket clip that would slide into that hole and could be secured
from the other side with a screw.
I'd like to replace that knife since I can't find the first one. However, I can't
seem to find any of the original version like I had except at exorbitant
prices (I can't imagine any reason this knife should cost more than $10 or $15)
and they don't seem to have the pocket clips with them. :thumbdn:
Anyone have one like I described they might want to sell at a
reasonable price?
Thanks for your time, and a great day to all of you.
