Just moved to a semi-ghetto area and looking to carry a new EDC as my old one just isn't "cutting" it anymore.

Knife preferences:
folder
Assisted open, but not spring
straight edge, white steel, around 3 to 4 inches in blade length
good, all-conditions grip
good strong steel material, blade doesn't need to be sharpened every week
blade keeps centered for long periods of time
feels comfortable in hand.
On a budget, around 60-70 bucks.

Thanks! :)

So because of your ghetto area, you want a knife for self defense? I would re-think that unless you have vast experience in knife-fighting. Take martial arts lessons with your money.

But if you insist on a knife with those parameters, I'd buy a used ZT or a Benchmade Contego.

Welcome to BF - stick around and contribute.

Used or Blemish ZT was my first thought, too.

We may be assuming too much by thinking that this is to be a SD knife, but a big Zero Tolerance would do well in that role, and you could also tell any interested officials that it's for work: hard to do that with a dagger-grind blade.

Totally agree. VERY few people would actually have it in them to bust out a knife and stab a would-be attacker, and even if they did, all that will usually do is make them pissed off. If you're worried about your safety, carry mace. But as far as the knife, the Kerhaw Cryo II sounds like it might fit the bill.

What exactly is "white steel"? Id have to go cold steel recon 1. 4" blade with the strong triad lock.

$60 on martial arts lessons isnt gonna get you very far. I dont care what anyone says, if you get attacked your better off with a weapon than without...

Assisted opening MEANS spring. Assisted is short for "spring assisted".
And what is "white steel"?

And "doesn't need to be sharpened every week" is a variable.
If you're opening mail only, you can go a month.
But if you're cutting aluminum cans and sandpaper, that's gonna dull it faster.
Depends on how you use it and how sharp you want it to stay.

Go to Kershaw Guy and buy a blemish.

When you get a chance, study the concept of situational awareness. It will keep you out of trouble. The guy who is going to rob you has been tracking you, watching your movements, and preparing his action. You are not and will not be a random target.

Personally, I know two people who shot and killed assailants who had the drop on them. They were trained, however.

Most knife fights are over in 20 seconds. Without training, owning a knife is like owning a firearm - useless or near useless when the bell rings. Simply holding out a knife is useless. I saw a guy pull a switchblade on another guy - only to have it kicked out of his hand picked up, and used on him.

Don't know what state you're in, but carry a firearm. If you're in one of the communist states like MD or CA, you are not allowed to protect yourself. Move. That is all.

From AG Russell's website:
White Steel
With traditional Japanese "Shirogami" or "White Steel" blade and bamboo handle and sheath, he has created for us another traditional Japanese hunting knife. "White Steel" and "Blue Steel" are terms that have only recently come into use in the U. S. Created by Hatachi, the terms actually refer to the color of the paper wrapper in which the raw bar stock is shipped. The chemical breakdown for White Steel is 1.4% carbon, 0.1% silica, 0.2% manganese, 0.02 phosphorus and 0.004% sulfur. This is significantly more carbon than is found in most U.S. steels which tend to have about 1.0% carbon. This added carbon allows the blades to be hardened in the mid-60s Rc. allowing for a thin razor edge. With no chromium, this steel is definitely not stainless.

Pretty sure you're full of shit.

spend that money on a folding baton, pepper spray, soft ball bat. I your on a real budget a nice steel pipe with duck tape hides well. Don't try to slice and stab or you will probably be sliced and stabbed.

Save your money and put it aside so you can move to a non-ghetto area.

In the meantime, grab a small fixed blade to EDC and get a crossdraw belt sheath for it. Knives aren't bad defensive weapons, if they never see it coming...

First, I agree with you.

Second. Knives are horrible defensive weapons, especially in the hands of a non trained combatant. Good offensive weapons, poor defensive.

Forget the crap, keep your eyes open, your head on a swivel when walking, and develop some situational awareness. All the knives in the world won't help if you get surprised because you're in lala land dreaming about Katy Perry our whomever you kids think of these days.

Oh, and go out and TALK to some of your neighbors. You might be surprised how far a smile and a handshake can go.
