Want to purchase another knife trying to stay in the $30 through $75 price range I'd would like a spring assist 3.5-4" blade that will hold an edge for cutting boxes, rose heads, paper, tape etc...with a comfortable handle. Right now all i have that is awesome are my boker kalashnikovs but the mini that i edc everyday doesn't hold an edge worth a damn and it wont sharpen right...:(
Recommended brands or model's please reply.
Thanks 73

I am thinking Kershaw Blur. In CPM154 or 154cm or even S30v will be good. Only think is that it's a little under 3 1/2 inches

Why would you choose AUS8 over the other 2 steels listed? It's like picking McDonalds over a fire grilled steak.

I didn't know aus8 is bottom of the barrel.... btw mac.donald's is nasty
I went to bladeplay where i buy most of my knives and i searched for kershaw blur none of them use aus8
I like this one a lot

It's not 'bottom of the barrel' necessarily.I like the way Boker HTs theirs as well as a couple of other manufacturers.I have a couple of AKs from Boker & they hold an edge decent. It's one of my favorite "budget autos".Maybe you got a lemon.
Also what do you mean "it doesn't sharpen right"?What are you sharpening with?

I bought the Smith's trihone system with juice(oil) maybe i just suck at sharpening...
What bothers me is my kalashnikov mini dagger just will not sharpen with the smith's. The blade says aus8 no other marks my kalashnikov green and chrome full size says Taiwan but i stabbed chicken wire and it holds an edge fine. Lastley my custom kalashnikov black says aus8 but no Taiwan it holds an edge fine i dont use it tho. Hope all that makes sense:confused:

I don't know enough about those particular knives to tell whether you got a fake or not,but that in & of it self would beg the question "Why would someone bother faking a $30 knife?"

Get yourself a Kershaw Needs Work as gooeytek suggested.I'd also recommend a Spyderco sharpmaker to keep it sharp.

To clear up the question, AUS8 is a cheap but good quality steel. It's heavily used by Cold Steel and Boker, and they do great work with it, but it's still a cheap steel. CPM154, 154cm and S30v are all higher end steels, and they will function better than AUS8 (better toughness, edge holding, etc.)

Hmm I'm having a bit of trouble finding a cold steel recon 1 with the triad lock system?
Its the one with the lock up forwards the front I don't like the one with the spine lock on top

triad is what is made now, its a back lock.

The old recon was a ultra lock similar to the axis lock.

Look at the Kershaw Piston or Knockout. They're both spring assisted, unlike the Recon 1.

Ok cool ah soo many choices !:banghead:
I thought cpm154 or c30v steel was the best to get ?
Forgot to add i dislike the double flip..only like the stud on the blade

While it's only offered in 14C28N Sandvik (which is decent stuff in its own right) the Kershaw Turbulence is a fine, often overlooked Kershaw that sports a nice useable blade profile. Also if you're after something a bit different the Leek is offered with their nifty composite blade that has both 13C26 and D2. I dunno if the leek would fare too well as a harder use knife, but for lighter stuff it should be right at home.

Very good whetrock. I appreciate everyone's input. Here's what is important to me. First of seeing how i can puncher steel chicken wire with my kalashnikov aus8 blade and still be sharp enough to cut other things like boxes, zip ties, tape and carpet. Here's what it boils down too. My kalashnikov is illegal to carry due to California's lame laws i want the same size blade if not larger, i def want spring assisted (never owned assisted knife) and a strong blade that can hold an edge but i don't want to break the bank. Oh and thumb stud i dislike the other kind.
