Looking for new vest

Hi,

After 4 years my old vest is slowly starting to disintegrate, I guess that constantly packing around 4 pounds worth of goodies in it has finally begun to take its toll.

It's a normal length, unknown manufacturer vest with lots of pockets but not really well thought out, I discovered that after using it for a couple off weeks. Also due to the weight of my goodies, it has been really cutting in the back of my neck as there is no soft/padded collar and no support yoke like in the vest I'm looking to get opinions on now.

I've been looking around for a lightweight poly/cotton vest with decent pockets designed to be actually used to carry more then a package of paper handkerchiefs etc.

I've come across the Orvis brand of Flyfishing vests and I'm starting to devellop a liking for their "Super Tac-L-Pak" vest
It has a lot of pockets and as far as I can see the vest is designed by people who really knew what they wanted.

The only objection I have is it's short (designed for fly fishing) and my wife finds that a minus point also, being married for a long time I have to take her opinion also into account.

I don't know if it would be optimal for daily wear, a normal length vest simply looks better, but I have a feeling this Super Tac-L-Pak
wears better.

So, if anyone has one, likes or dislikes it or has a better vest for up to a whopping $80 let me know.

I'm really interested in any comments on the Orvis Super Tac-L-Pak
You can see it at: http://www.orvis.com/store/altview....9&subcat_id=3

Hello Bagheera,
I have a cotton vest made by Woolrich (looks like a photographer's vest)-lots of pockets, mesh back, padded collar. It looks good, is comfortable to wear, and is reasonably priced. I looked at some of the brand name photographer vests which were more expensive before getting this one.

Vested Interests--

Campmor carries a versatile reversible travel vest:

Cabela's has tons of vests, fishing, hunting, travel:

Cabelas

Brigade Quartermaster carries a lot of tactical vests, one might suit your needs:

Brigade Quartermasters

Filson makes some excellent vests, I like the wool mackinaw vests:

Filsons "Might as well have the best"

Sierra Trading Post has a lot of turnover in product as they close out clothes and gear. If you see something you like...BUY IT NOW or it'll be gone.

Sierra Trading Post

Like Filson, Woolrich makes some nice vests:

Hope these, and the REI link above give you enough choices. Like your namesake 'Good Hunting'.

. . . I've been thinking about getting a Filson Game Bag. It's big enough to hold a 2-quart collapsible GI canteen, a merino wool base layer, a lightweight shell (Montane's featherlite smock and bottoms), first aid/emergency essentials and lunch. I could also wear one with the beltless Golite day pack I use for short (3-days or less) backpacking trips with less than 25 pounds.

By the way Bagheera, I believe that I have seen you posting a thread on some kind of survivalknife from your native-country.
If my memory is not playing tricks on me would you then care to repost the link.

Thanks in advance.

Buck,

I've tried finding the post you mean but haven't been able to find it but the Ducth Knifemakers you mean are father and son Albert and Frans van den Heuvel AKA Hill (Heuvel is the Dutch for Hill) Knives.

There is an unofficial site were there is information (in English :) ) about the knives Hill Knives produces.
Just go to:

http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~hovinga/bp/list/hill.html

I have the KCT-001 and I'm thinking of parting with it.

Also go to the official website of Hill Knives:

http://www.hillknives.com/

And enjoy what you see.

Bill, thanks for the vests site, theSafari/photographers vest looks very good.

I also have one of the Hill knives though mine is the KCT-002. I am very happy with it. It is a qualit peice of steel. Getting payment to them form the US and arranging shipping was a bit of a hassle since they don't take credit cards form the US. Overall though well worth it in my opinion. akraven@alaska.net

I have a Filson fly fishing vest loaded with pockets, very functional but out of your price range.

I have lots of vests [non loadbearing]. I'm a vest fanatic. there are sooo many to choose from. Columbia, North Face, Sierra Designs, Ex Officio etc, all the typical companies have some good ones. Willis & Geiger made a really good one, if you can find one. You'll have to choose between cotton and non. I think it's likely that Tilley will have what you are looking for http://www.tilley.com/ http://www.tilley.com/shop2.asp?path=root\Men's_Tilleys\Jackets_and_VestsThe Lightweight is pretty solid and not expensive. The VOMP is pricey and pretty stiff, both in price and material, but it's tough and has a removable pad in the neck for carrying. It can get pretty hot through the neck and shoulders though. they also have a cotton jacket with removable sleeves that's not bad.
[sorry about the general link;the specific link just doesn't want to work]

Oops, I missed this thread the first time around. Looks like you got a lot of good advice already. I would just second Cabelas as a quality place to shop, and they do ship overseas.

Their upland game vests are very versatile, durable, and handy.

Hey Piet,
Check out A.G. Russell's website-there's a nice vest there at $49.95, I believe. I just stumbled across it while looking for something else.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the tip, I had a hard time finding it but finally did.
The vest looks OK but somehow I'm geared more to the flyfishing vests, except for their length, as it looks like they have a more thought out placement of pockets.
