i want to get a hold of some laminated steel in the style of the lovely knives by claudio cas. anybid know a good source? and a place i can get it flatground would be even better.

Thanks in advance!

Can you provide a bit more information as to what you want? If it's a laminate as you say is it a san mai type bar you want? Mike Norris is doing what I concider to be laminated billets with several patterns on the outside, in a couple of sizes and several patterns in stainless. Jantz Supply sells his Damascus Frank

Yup, san mai is what im looking for. Steel doesnt really matter. Id like a carbon core though. Ill try jantz. Once i grind id like the exposed underlayer to look like a hamon after etching.

Mike Turner sells San Mai. Look for his stuff in the knifemakers for sale area.
If you have him or someone else make you some. Ask for some nickel silver tape between the carbon core and wrought iron outer layers.
A C Richards and I made up a billet one day when I was getting a forging lesson and it turned out awesome with the nickel silver adding a layer of depth. It was very "hamony"!!

will do! thats a great idea!

Randy Jr. of Haas knives does some nice stuff as does Mike Turner who is doing some for me right now. Frank

Nickel silver, not pure nickel?
Well.... I thought it was nickel silver tape. We did two layers between the 1084 core and the wrought iron outer layers. I'll ask Chuck to clarify as I'm just a rookie! But, you're likely correct in that it was pure nickel...

Not to hijack the thread, but where can you get nickle foil? I have searched everywhere and can't seem to find any

I thought I remembered hearing about a German company that sells San Mai billets comprised of some rather exotic steels? I'll try to find the link. Someone posted it last time this came up, I think. Anyone with a better memory have recollection of the company name/site?

Great job Eric... This does show the difference in using the nickle foil and not. When using the foil it prevents the carbon migration that gives the wild hamon looking effect. I like both methods, just depends on what the final desired effect is.

Eric, I drool on my keyboard everytime I see that knife. I think the general consesus I've heard is that the best man got a nicer knife than your son's Damascus. thanks for letting me know where you got it.
