Pretty much what the title says, I'd like your learned opinions comparing my two mid-range Busse's, the NMSFNO vs. the SAR-8, as choppers/camp knives/all-around one-knives.
Thanks!

Bloody Bill,

Both great knives but the handles feel very different. I would go with the NMSFNO -- love the balance and weight distribution. It has enough heft to do almost anything without being overly heavy or unwieldy. The SAR handle is just not my favorite, but I know others love it.

Bill, I cant comment on the sar 8 use (have handled many though) but Im going to injerect with my sarge 7 instead as Ive used it and an nmsfno :p

I have medium mits for what its worth. I prefer the feel of the sar/sarge. Though the nmsfno typically(if not always?) uses mag sized grips, they are not the beefiest mags of them all. However, if you like standard sized, as I myself do for a user friendly blade, I prefer the sar. The handle is also more flowy, has a nice rock(as in a cradle)/chop feel in hand if that makes much sense :p I also prefer the blade shape and overall look. It has a more curvy/slender feel to it opposed to a chunkier/thicker feel with the nmsfno. Of course just my opinion, I like em on the slender side personally. I have only tried to chop with an nmsfno 1x. My first larger busse. A CG coated V edge I do believe. It was not very efficient at chopping. Battoning, didnt do much but I bet it would be a MAD mad in that dept. The edge to be honest seemed a little thicker then the convex edge on my sarge(sars). However Ive never used a comp finish or an LE nmsfno and have always wanted to as the comps I handled at blade were amazing edge wise. I have chopped pointlessly with my basically lighter sarge 7 (light brigade?) and I cant complain for its size.

Just a few pics to get your brain juices flwoing : P

Sarge (so add an 1" :p) next to a cpl others

Ahhh my first "larger busse". Got it from Skunk(greeny)

Ended up trading it with a sweet sheath for this of which I will be buried with :D (Thanks HDW, I still love you)

An almost side-by-side with an original Gemini in between. Of the 2, I prefer the NMSFNO. I never used the SAR8, but it was really slick at the talon hole, and didn't feel like much of a guard. My SARGE7 doesn't feel like that though so I can't really explain it. I also think that hand shaped micarta scales for the NMSFNO feel nearly perfect.

I do like the SHe even more though.

Your post states "my two mid-range Busse's" so I assume you already own these two. If not then drive south a couple of hours and you can come and use mine to your heart's content.

I did a few chopping videos and comparisons including with those two. Some comments here:

I think I am in the minority here but I prefer the SAR-8 over the NMSFNO. Nothing against the NMSFNO as it is a great knife, a midsize beast, and I think it is a very popular choice here for "the one Busse". I feel the SAR series handle suits my hands better and allows me more versatility in use than the NMSFNO. The SAR-8 is a little lighter but performs well in chopping for its size. After the B11 the SAR-8 is my favorite Busse. Let me know if you have more questions and I will do my best to refresh my memory but it has been a while though since I have used them.
