Looking for opinions-production fixed blades

Looking for opinions from those who actually owned or handled some of these, preferably a few so they can compare...

I'm interested in purchasing one of the following -
SOG Government Agent (I believe AUS 6)
Cold Steel SRK or ODA in Carbon V
Fallkniven A1
Old Black Jack like Randall model 1

You get the idea of the blade type I'm looking for, but I really would like a plain carbon blade. How does the Fallkniven VG10, or laminated steel compare.

I owned an SOG NW Ranger before and thought the steel was soft (tip bent when I dropped it on vinyl tile), so if I didn't have a lemon and the rest of their steel is like that I'd pass. I can't seem to find the old recon version which was carbon.... :(

If the Cold Steel carbon V is tougher than VG10 than I may pick up one and rehandle it. They offer one with a micarta handle, but only in stainless.

I just can't find the combination I'm looking for. Also prefer a thinner blade since I prefer to use a knife to cut and not chop. I have plenty of 1/4" thick knives so 3/16" or less would be great.

Couple items I like that Trace Rinaldi produces...I don't think he's taking orders at this point and never see any on the used market.

I'll keep searching for that perfect knife. If I could put a hilt on my 3/16" Busse Satin Jack I might be real close...if only it were a clip point.

thanks for your opinions - Brian

I own both a SOG Gov Agent, and a Cold Steel SRK. I like them both but consider them to be to entirely different tools. I have definately worked my srk a lot more, but that is only because it has such a thick spine. It makes for good outdoor use. "Hey, that oak branch is half downed! I can't find a hatchet? Hmmmm..." and so forth. The SOG however remains my favorite fixed blade. I still think of it more as a strictly tactical knife however. I have used it for some pretty nasty duties (Had to deliver coup de grâce to a buck my brother hit with a car.) Over all, I can't get enough of my SOG. I have never held a more balanced, better fealing fixed blade in my life; and I say that with out exageration. But as I always say: Go and feel them for yourself.

Oh, and if you get the SRK, change the handle ASAF.

Bark River may have what you are looking for.

Listen to pep. Bark River should definately have what you need.

You asked for carbon, they use premium A2 tool steel.. You asked for blades meant for cutting not chopping.. BINGO!

Could Busse do a re-grind on your SJ? Seems like there were a few clip point SJ's done awhile back.

I thought I saw some Bark River knives of the Randall sort, but they were in 154cm....unless it was a typo. And I couldn't find that style on their site...maybe I wasn't looking hard enough.

The Cold steel ODA is available in Carbon and at a bargin (around $55). Seems too good to pass up.

I did handle the SOG agent, that's why it's on my list. I'm just skeptical about the steel and wish they still made a carbon version.

thanks for the input - Brian
