Hello all. I haven't posted in awhile because life got in the way of leather work. I have mainly worked on sheaths for fixed blade knives. I have always wanted a nice belt ammo holder and a butt-stock ammo holder, but I wasn't sure where to start. What weight leather is good for this project? I have 8-9oz on hand, but thought it might be a little thick. Is there a secret for measuring the strap that holds the ammo and then stitching to hold it in place? I have seen rivets used on the belt holders on the bottom part instead of stitching. I haven't used rivets and would like to try them out so can anyone recommend a good size? I know there are many options, just want a few opinions. The butt-stock holder will need eyes added to tighten it together with a leather lace. Again any certain size recommended? I am diving into new territory and would appreciated any tips or opinions. Thanks for reading!

I would want a lighter leather, but I'm not versed in the type of project you are attempting. I would guess at 6/7oz.

What type of rivets? If you go with copper, get a little longer than you think you'll need. They are easy to shorten, not so easy to make longer. ;) You can set them without a setter, but the setter will probably be worth buying.

No idea on strap size. Sorry I'm not much help.

Thanks for the response. I found a picture online that incorporated lots of rivets. I don't plan on using this many, but the size and color would work fine.

You know, I'd have to double check my copies, but I believe these are covered in the "Case" making series of Al Stohlman books. It may be a leather box as opposed to an open design like the above though. I'll take a look.

Edit- yeah it's for an enclosed case. If you'd like, shoot me an email. Ive got a couple of ideas that might help.

Hi, I usually use a softer leather for a buttstock shell holder, 5 to6 oz and depending on the caliber of the shells I have several pieces of tin that I cut over the years that are the right measurement for both the length of the loop before sewing and the right width to place the stitches. What caliber are you wanting to make the loop for and I'll see if I have one to fit and I'll measure it for you.

Thanks for the info. It will hold a .308 variant casing. What cut of leather did you use? I have only used shoulders in the past.
