Hi,
I am interested in fair quality BG42 folders. I know that Spyderco makes their military in BG42, but do they make something like the Manix in BG42 or does anyone make something comparable in price out of BG42??

thanks

Don't overlook the Military! The Carbon Fiber & BG-42 mixed with an awsome design lets this Spyderco reside in the realm of High-Tech fully Functional EDC's. When i Clip mine into my pocket I feel as if I have a leg up on the rest of the world. It is an amazing work horse. And if you so desire and decide to stowe it away as a collector piece it won't let you done for that purpose either!!!!

AG Russell has a Boker Helios with BG-42. 3 3/8 in drop point hardened to RC61-62. Only 180 are available in the US and AG has them all. A limited edition high quality knife for $125.

I also seen some BG-42 Small Sebenzas listed for sale here as well. That would be a sweet folder to get.

I have a Schrade(defunct) Limited Edition(1 of 500) framelock with zytel handles and BG42 blade. Locking folder designed by Ron Lake and Walker.I think it's a sleeper as they are selling low on ebay. Not too great for heavy duty use but great edc.

In a small gentlemans knife the Case Slim lock in dyed jigged or smooth bone with mirror finished steel is very pretty. It comes with a mini sheath, and a presentation box. It's mirror polished BG42. Joe

thanks. I like the military, but the lack of liners has always worried me

Don't let it worry you, they do indeed have liners ... the new BG42 Military has dual nested liners unlike the S30V model which only has one. I still think it was an unnecessary addition of weight since CF contributes it own structural reinforcement to the rigidity of this knife (I have 2 and you couldn't twist these handles if you tried). Go out and get either model. Good luck.

For what it's worth - I ordered this exact knife and sent it back a few days after I got it. I thought it was very poorly made.

On the plus side - AG Russell's customer service was excellent. My issue was with Boker, not Russell.

I don't own one, but have looked at the Helios line. What made it a poorly made knife? Bad lock-up, bad fit-and-finish? I'm asking because I'd like to know before plunking down $125 on one, and reviews of the model are scarce.

IMO, the answer to your question is "no".

CRK may be considered by some to be better, but it's more expensive. Others would not match the quality of SPyderco.

Multiple problems.

1) The blade came loose "side to side" - I had to adjust the pivot screw to tighten. You could actually see the blade wiggle at the pivot. How did it ever get out of the factory like that?

2) The blade does not lock up well - it is loose "back and forth". As near as I can tell - the liner material is kind of thin and weak. If you push down on the locked blade, even a little - you can see the liner metal flex.

3) Low quality fit and finish. The blade had a small ding - looks like somebody hit it with a punch tool. The wood inlays in the handle were kind of crudely made. I could have lived with these cosmetic problems if it didn't have more seruious construction issues.

Then, subjectively, the knife just didn't have that positive "click click" that I like in a folder. You could actually flick the blade out without even touching the thumb post.

I own $30 folders that I like better.

Again, let me stress - AG Russell was great!

j22knife, Thanks for the heads up. I was going to order it because of a Boker I had in the past. It was very well made. I will have to pass on that one.I will however look at the Sebenza.

I recommend you buy one a Spyderdo Military in BG42 with the carbon fiber handles. I'm willing to bet that you'll love it, and find it worthy of any task you might have for a folder.

I have a few bg-42 sebenzas and they are fantastic knives. If you can find one, grab it. You won't be let down.
