I have my fair share of quality production knives but they all seem to lack soul. I am looking to make a step towards the higher end folder. Hopefully something easy to aqquire.

Id look into custom makers here.

hard to define soul for everyone is different.

I really like my small sebenza.

To me soul is visualy intresting and has something that makes it different than anything else. Exotic materials are nice too.

I'd look into one of Ray Laconico's small jasmine folders. You can get a framelock small jasmine for 500-650 depending on what options you choose. Nice folders that are well built!

I do not like the plain sebenzas, feels much too plain!

It must have nice wood inlay.

IMO traditionals seem to capture soul... havent found the right one for me yet.

It all depends on the amount of customization you want. Semi-custom Bodegas are great, but might be big for some people. There are a lot of Custom knives in your price range just depends on size and style you want.

Are there any fine cutlery shops in your area?

Sometimes clerks are willing to dig up some very fine knives, if you ask them nice.

im glad I got to handle some very pricey knives, otherwise I most likely would of just looked online and never actually buy them. Im very picky usually.

I really like my Chris Reeve Umnumzaan. I've had many Sebenzas; they are great, but the Zaan is a special knife. Take a look at it. I've had several of these; the latest is a more recent series that has a LBS. This newer design makes it much easier to unlock the blade, due to increased thumb access to the lockbar.

How big of a folder? Willing to wait sometimes extended periods for customs? Semi-customs / mid-tech okay? Manual thumb-stud (or alike) opening or manual flipper or assisted opening or automatic, etc.?

We have several custom builders of folding knives on here. Send a PM or two. Browse the traditionals forums for pics that will make your mouth water. Jared Oeser, for one, Enrique Pena for another. Both have threads in the traditionals forum with lots of pics of the different knives they've made over time. Honestly, beautiful work. There are other makers on here who are just as good, depending on your tastes. Look around. We are living in a golden age of folding knives.

I have a custom knife store in my town, they carry some William Henry stuff, a lot actually. But they have crazy mark ups because they are the only shop in the state with quality.

IIRC, William Henry has VERY STRICT pricing guidelines and everyone has to sell them for the same price.

I would scroll through the custom and handmade section as well as the knifemakers market. Lots of AWESOME stuff in both.
