Hello All,
I am fairly new to knives and am currently shopping for a knife and would welcome all the recommendations on brands/models I can have. The knife would be used fishing/hunting and for everyday carry. Most likely I would not be fileting fish with it but may used it to clean birds or small game while hunting. Friends have told me to look at Spyderco and SOG, I am looking for a folding knife with the blade anywhere from 3.5" to 5". And would like to spend about $100.
I also wonder about whether I should get one wih part of the blade serrated and if I should look at the automatic or spring open models?
Thanks so much for the brand/model recomendations!

I think your criteria is too wide (3.5-5 inch blade and about $100).

Off what you've given, I'd suggest staying away from autos (good ones start over $100).

Also, stay away from serrations, as they often hinder outdoorsy activities.

Of the knives I carry regularly, the Benchmade 710 is about the only one I'd recommend meeting the price. The 710 is a great overall design, but the recurve may be an issue for your resharpening skills.

Or, a knife I don't carry but think everyone should use at some point is the classic Buck 110. Similarly, the Spyderco Endura (Spyderco makes many knives that would meet your needs).

But at this point, I'd recommend lurking about the forum for a week or so and limiting your choices more.

Second the recommendation on the Buck 110. First, it is a relatively inexpensive but very strong folder. Second the blade shape would be perfect for cleaning birds or small game while hunting, and you could even fillet small fish easily. Third, it's a lockback. This means the blade channel is completely unobstructed, no small-parts locks to get gunked up, much easier to wash out.

Fourth, if you really get hooked on the 110, Buck has a custom shop where you can order versions with upgraded steels and handle materials! :D

To me best fit for this price will be Bass Pro CPM 154 Buck 110 or Spyderco ZDP189 Delica or Endura. Buck however has way better ergo for long use.

Thanks, Vassili.
