Looking for recommendations on knife for specified uses

Hello everyone,

I would like to ask for a recommendation since I am not very familiar with knives yet.

I would like to use the knife primarily for short time camping to help with cutting smaller pieces of wood, cutting off and shaping medium branches; maybe also able to cut a can or similar thin metal.
For heavy duty stuff I always carry an axe, for "light" work I carry pocked knives and tools so this one should be something in between.

My idea is to buy something around 15-20cm (7-8 inch, blade length) with main blade not serrated but some serration or saw like finish would be appreciated maybe on spine side of the knife.

Will be very grateful for any recommendations or pointing out potential usage questions that I missed.

Thank you, Martin

For a good price,
Folding: Ontario RAT I/II
Fixed: Kabar BK-14 Eskabar/BK-11
Assuming you meant in length overall..

Thank you for reply, I adjusted the post accordingly, I do not have currently preference between fixed or folding blade (are there some structural advantages or disadvantages besides the apparent blade cover?), but the 15-20 cm should be the blade length.

For the purposes you describes, either way is fine, I would personally go with a small fixed blade such as the BK14, excellent knife, i've used it outdoors extensively and it performs well, and depending on where you live, you can get it under 38 dollars, but I recommend you buy a sharpening system, such as the Lansky Deluxe ($39) or a Spyderco Sharpmaker along with the knife if you haven't done so already. Here's a pic of the BK14

Oh.... 7-8 inch BLADE LENGTH, sorry I didnt read that part, in that case you might want to look into the Kabar BK7 or BK9, although personally I don't see the need for such a large blade for light use.
But if you want an all-around fixed blade the BK16/BK17 will do you right.
As you can see, i'm a big fan of Kabar BK knives :p

Thank you for your recommendations, I looked into the Ka-Bar knives a bit more and found out that the BK line is indeed interesting.

I would recommend to just leave the saw teeth on the saw. They really never work well on a knife, and a folding pocket saw can be purchased for around $20. look at the esee line of knives. They are great blades for a reasonable price and will do everything very well. I personally own the junglas which is a bit larger then you are looking for but would be a great choice if you didn't mind the extra size. Plus that extra size comes in very handy when doing camp chores like firewood and shelter making.

You might want to look for a Victorinox with a lockable balde and a saw.
You can get it with a can opener and a bottle opener.
There are variants that open with one hand.
hope this helps

Swamp Rat Ratmandu. Perfect for camping, and it's absolutely beautiful! Here's mine:

Or if you wanna save some dough, the BK17 would work fine too. Here's mine (old pic - it's a lot more "loved looking" now):

All the knives mentioned would be great for you. So....nothing for me to say I guess.
