Happy Sunday,

I'm trying to reassemble an SRM 9215 flipper my brother took apart and I noticed that one of the bronze washers is missing and the other one is creased. I looked online, contacted SRM, and went to a Fastenal retail store and have not been able to source this particular washer. The outside diameter is 10mm and the inside diameter is 5mm, and there are 6 holes evenly spaced on the washer. Anybody know where I can pick up a pair of these washers? Many thanks.

Wishing you luck in your search for washers. I just want to add something from my experience with another SRM folder (9202-GW). The pivot houses 4 washers, two Teflon/nylon washers and two bronze. Unlike all other washer based folders that I own, the SRM has the synthetic washer against the blade and not the bronze washer. So the bronze is not touching the blade but instead is against the liner. Kinda strange in my limited experience. It is possible that your brother lost the synthetic washers, or perhaps your model does not use synthetic washers. Hope this helps.

Replacing original washers with generic ones can be tricky. Not only do you need to reasonably match the inner and outer diameters (maybe precisely in some cases), but you also need the correct thicknesses. Install the wrong thickness, and the knife doesn't work right.

For an outer diameter of 10mm, I'd recommend an OD washer of 3/8ths". That's likely the closest you're going to get.

For an inner diameter of 5mm, that's more tricky. The closest I've seen to an ID of 5mm in bronze phosphor washers is 3/16ths". But 3/16ths" might be a fraction of a hair too small, just enough not to fit, in which case you'd have to open up the hole a little. I've had to do this with washers for 5mm pivots. There are two ways to do this-1. use a very fine round file, or, 2. wrap some fine grit sandpaper (400) around something evenly round that will just fit inside the hole of the washer with the sandpaper wrapped around it and sand around and around. But this only works well on washers .010 or thicker. If the washers are thinner than that, then it would be like trying to sand foil.

And then there's getting the thickness right. If you don't have a micrometer to measure the original washers (or if you don't have the original washers), then you would need to buy several different thicknesses, and use trial and error. Bronze phosphor washers are typically sold in .005, .010, .015, .016, .020 thicknesses.

Like I said, it can be tricky.

And I wouldn't get your hopes up of finding washers with the little holes in them (which I believe are to hold lubricant). Those seem to be specialty washers.

I buy most of my washers from USAKnifemaker, linked by Rycen. I also buy from Knifekits.com.

My assortment of washers :) .

Thanks guys. I did notice the nylon washers, he had another 9215 that he wanted me to swap out the blades with so that knife was intact. Now I just need a set of the bronze washers to fix this second knife. I’ll check out usaknifemaker.com.
