I like the look of rustic, semi-finished blades, but with nice handles. Along these lines of some of these (not the Damascus ones):

Finding this style of knife is a problem, but finding affordable ones seems a bigger problem (most of what I see online starts around $500 and up). I'd hope to spend no more than $250-$300 for larger chef-type sizes, and around $150-$200 or so for smaller paring sizes.

Question: Can anyone point me to some knife makers who do this kind of work at this price range?

PS I figure a forum member should post at least once every 15 years just to stay in practice.

IMHO , Ok, not so humble! Rustic is a marketing term for unfinished! Just so you are aware, those with the dot type circles are beaten with a ball peen hammer & have little to nothing to do with the forging process. — my suggestion if you like the old looking carbon steel knives is to hunt on EBay etc and but those!....Good luck!

"Blacksmith" finish or kurouchi is what it sounds like you are describing. You can get these types of knives for decent prices. Maintenance however is a problem. The traditional Japanese blacksmith finish has a lacquer coating to preserve the look for awhile but will eventually wash away. I personally dont do a blacksmith finish (im a stock removal guy) but If you are just looking for carbon steel patina I think a carefully maintained carbon steel blade can look pretty rustic with the right handle. Send me an email if you would like to discuss a custom knife of this type.

Buck makes great elk handle kitchen knives. ..420hc steel, lifetime warranty, very rustic lookin.

I think you just have to look around more, it's not uncommon for current crop of knifemakers to make rustic kurouchi or brut de forge kitchen knives with a rustic aesthetic, just sayin'... ;) Check out the kitchen knives section of the knifemaker's for sale area on the forum!
