I'm looking for an EDC for my brother. Based on his tastes, I'm looking for a knife like the Spyderco Sage 2 but with a more tactical-looking blade.

-3" or under
-Pass-through construction
-Choil
-Under 4oz

Any suggestions?

Step 1: Buy a Sage 2
Step 2: Paint it black
Step 3: Present the new tactical blade to your brother.

What do you mean by "tactical looking blade"?

Probably black, something along the lines of Dark Ops or Mantis style?

Oh, you raise a good point. He would probably want to make it partially serrated and put a lot of writing on the blade before it would become truly 'tactical'. :D

how about a sage 1 or sage 3?

don't forget about the spyderco manix 2. it's basically a larger sage and it comes in black DLC coated blade

Something like this? That makes my eyes want to :barf:
Just get your brother a Sage 1 with carbon fiber. He will love it. You can prevent him from turning into a mall ninja if you intervene quickly.

How about a Strider PT? got the choil, under 3" blade, Ti framelock.
Only problem is that it has a backspacer...that, and it costs a little more than the Sage II.

How much you willing to spend? There's the Strider PT, 3" blade, very "tactical" looking. It's $300 though.

Honestly, in my experience the more "tactical" a blade is, the less useful it is for every-day stuff.

Maybe look at the various Spyderco Natives. They're 3" knives, have a finger choil, and although the blades are still very utilitarian, the hollow grinds and swedges give them a lot of style and swagger. The nicest is definitely the carbon fiber one, although the blade is flat ground and perhaps not as cool looking.

I completely agree but when I became interested in knives, the tactical look appealed to me. He'll just have to go through the progression as well.

Sage 2= $150
Strider PT= $300+

Not really a little more but I also suggest a Strider PT if cost is no issue. Its by far one of the most tactical looking knives. Also a Emerson Mini CQC-7 is a great little knife and a great poor man's alternative to a PT.

That's what I was thinking. Only the black blade with serrations.
