Looking for saw recommendations

Hi Folks!

I'm considering the purchase of another folding saw (usually for cutting wood for campfires, clearing around a tree stand, clearing a campsite - that sort of thing).

I have a 24" Dustrude and it is without a doubt a super tool. However, I need something smaller that I can put in a pack. I live in East TN in a heavily wooded area. Most of what I would be cutting will be 6" and smaller, usually more like 2-4" diameter.

I've looked at Silky folding saws, as well as the 15" Sven and 17" Eka models. The Silky seems like the logical choice, but I really like having enough tool for the job and replaceable blades are a plus too. Durability is a big factor for me.

So, who has "hands on" time with any of these tools? I'd sure like to hear some feedback and any recommendations that y'all might have. Thank you!

Silky. It's as rugged as you're going to get for that type of saw and it cuts better than the others I've tried. You can carry spare blades for it too.

Another vote for the Silky I have a BigBoy and love it. It works circles around all my other saws.

I bought Silky's coarse-blade Pocket Boy for inclusion in a 48-hour ES pack, but have ended up using it around the yard for the past two years; it has become my favorite saw.

I have the sven and the silky.

I prefer the sven but I don't always want the size. In some cases it might be too long for a day pack and it has some more weight if your counting ounces. I can apply more force with the sven then I can a folding saw due to its bow saw design. With the triangle bow saw you don't really get to use the full length of the blade like a real bow saw but it's still a solid design.

I carry the silky saw when I'm backpacking/hiking and not so much camping. It's a little lighter and I'm typically using it for smaller diameter quick cuts instead of processing larger branches. It cuts very quick and is a great tool, but the bow saw design is better IMO. It is also quicker to deploy so easy out easy in to the bag is nice, where as the sven is a take it out, set it up, take it a part, and work it back into your pack.

I really like my Bahco Laplander folding saw. It is surprisingly durable for a folding saw. Nice size to store in a pack. I've cut pine and hardwoods with my Bahco and I'm still surprised how good it cuts. I think the Bahco is a nice choice along with a good axe.

My folding saw of choice is the Bahco Laplander and for bigger jobs the Trailblazer take down buck saw.

I've got a Bahco Laplander, but for about $15ish bucks, you can build one of these. Brace height of 8" or so.

packs up pretty nice too:cool:
There's a gaggle of vids on youtube. I took a lil' from each & came up with my own version of the takedown model on the uber-cheap.

My favourite is the Silky Gomboy 240 with medium teeth. One of the reasons why the Silky is better than others is that the blade is tapered from the cutting edge towards the spine.

Just a few for thought, 1. Corona 10inch folding saw. 2. Silky Pocket Boy 170 and 3. I just picked up a Silky Ultra Accel 240mm (9.5inch) Curved Blade and if you want a Super Saw this is it. It is about the same size as the Corona 10 inch but built a lot better. I know you will pay for that but at the low $40.00s area still not bad for what you get.

For several years I've been using the Bahco Laplander for camping and general yard use. Light, sturdy, and does the trick every time.

I use the Opinel Folding Saw

Overall Length: 9 and 3/4" > Blade Length: 4 and 3/4" > Steel: Sandvik 12C27 Stainless > Weight: 4.1 oz.
$26.

Excellent light
A great lightweight saw for EDC when out and about
Very sharp cuts easily
I leave the Silky type or laplander at home
Not to build log cabins
Back up your big saw for smaller cuts

I want to say thank you to all who have posted. I appreciate the feedback. It looks like I'm gonna give a Silky a try. I'd still like to hear more suggestions - particularly from someone who has some "hands on" time with an EKA Viking as well. That saw would seem to fill the void between the Silky and the Dustrude. Thanks again.

I have a Silky GomBoy 210mm and find it a great saw for camping or backpacking . Maybe not if you're going to go through truck loads of wood , but for most normal needs it can handle it no problem .

HOLD Y BEER AND WATCH THIS !

Corona 10" Razor Tooth kicks ass. Had it about a year and it has cut lots of hard wood all over the US, mostly oaks.
It cost about $20 and is hard to lose in the outdoors.

Thanks for the tip on the Corona. BTW, how do you like that TOPS CUB? I've got both a Dragonfly 4.5 and a BOB, and I like 'em both, but I'm also curious about the CUB....

Well, I love the TOPS C.U.B., it is everything I wanted in a knife, TOPS did a good job with it, but I'm a bit biased!
Been using mine for almost a year.

More Corona

I have always wanted a silky but never really had a problem with my cheap fiskars. seeing that corona and for the price I may have to grab one of those bad boys.
