They are in Central California....I've been out there and can say that it is first Class!!! From the community, to the shop machinery and facility...to the instructors....and even the director (Chris Dery) all world class!!

Michael. Ed Fowler is now offering a Seminar on the "High Performance Blade". It is a week long course and you learn everything from the forging process all the way through the heat treating processes. CHeck out the JD loadshaft forum posted by Dan for some more insight on what kind of knives Ed is teaching particpants to make. Good luck in your endeavor.

Man if you want to learn now there are more options than ever. like you mentioned earlier there is the ABS school in old washington. The sierra school mentioned earlier, there is one more on the east coast but for the life of me I can't remember it right now. Center cross metal works has plenty of DVD's and VHS tapes of various makers forging plain steel to damascus. They also have a lot of videos on other really important stuff as well as you progress. There are a few bladesmith's as well that will have a class with you in there shop. Larry Harley does, so does Ed Caffery. I know Johnny Stout used to teach on folders and may still do it. And I believe there is a fellow in utah that worked with steve johnson giving classes. Plus go to all the hammer in's and rendevous you can go to. They all ways have free seminars that will teach you a lot in a hurry. Plus just look in the ABS charter books, or knives almanac's for knifemakers in your area and call them up. You might be able to come over and practice a little with them. Today the sky is limit on the tutoring you can recieve on knifemaking, and your pocketbook. Good luck.

thanks for all the help guys. i'm looking into the ABS i think. now the trick is finding a way down there. seems its tough to find a close by airport. and i sure don't want to rent a car and drive 400 miles after a flight
any suggestions from those of you who have gone to the ABS school?

Oh Dave Samolis(sp) rode a bus from New York. He also said he would never do that again. The closest airport might be in texarkana, then a 30 minute drive with a car rental. If you go wait till you get your class list of people attending, call them and see where everyone is staying. If you can swing it, try to have everyone stay together and you'll have several friends for life.

Michael,

Talk to the director of the School in Ol Washington, Scotty Hayes. He's a very personable guy. His number is listed on the ABS web site for info about the school.....he might have more insight on travel arrangements.....or even getting you in contact with other students to share a rental car or even car pool. For example, Scotty lives in Texarkana...maybe he could give you a lift. The folks that I've talked to in the past have always flown into Little Rock.

Or through Scotty, learn more about the attendies for your particular class.....maybe you can find someone that will be passing through your area on thier way over....or at least a common place where you can meet-up to share the drive and gas.
