I am sure this subject has been beaten to death........but without being able to search previous threads, I will bring it up again.

I am looking for a new EDC. Partial serration, opening assisted, pocket clip. No smaller than a 3" blade. Not looking to break the bank, but I would like to get a decent quality knife for the money. This knife will be mainly used for everyday tasks, and I will also ask it to perform basic camp duties, such as food preparation, minor wood preparation, rope cutting etc.

What do you suggest? What knife has worked for you? Thanks in advance. :D

first thought that came to my mind was a kershaw blur, but i wouldn't baton wood with it. i'd happily sharpen a pencil or shave tinder or make marshmallow sticks with it, though.

maybe one of the zero tolerance knives would be better if you're going to baton wood

The Blur is a cool little knife. I currently carry the Leek, and I love the quality that Ken Onion puts into those knives.

ZT knives are excellent as well, but definitely out of my price range. :(

If by serrated you mean fully serrated then I'm afraid you're out of luck. I don't think anybody except Spyderco and Cold Steel do full serrations. I'm not sure about CS but Spyderco doesn't make assisted openers.

Somebody will undoubtedly chime in if I'm wrong about a fully serrated AO.

Nope, just partial serration. ;)

Well I've got good news. Spyderco is the king of partially serrated blades too. I know I have a few of them and they all are top notch.

The one I would currently recommend would be that Spyderco Endura model you can get with the ZDP-189 blade steel. A buddy of mine just got one in fully serrated but the dealer told me that the same folder is available in combo edge as well as plain edge.

And let me tell you ZDP-189 is awesome blade steel. I have 3 Spyders with that blade steel and it performs great. And it holds an edge very well. The only drawback to ZDP-189 is that it tends to be prone to some types of corrosion. Acids from fruits and vegetables will pit the edge if you don't wash it in fresh water after you use it for cutting up foods that are acidic.

You just can't go wrong with that blade. The Endura is a sweet knife. They have one now that even has a G-10 handle from what I've been told. But Spyderco's FRN handles are great. I'm carrying one of them now. Good Luck

Rock on. I carried one of the early Spyderco models years ago, but I haven't owned one since then (2000). I will look into the Endura. I definitely like the idea of the foliage green handle.

you'll love a green handled knife...until you drop it in the woods.

kershaw blur red!

spydie holes can be converted to wave openers if you want, or you can spydie drop it, which is also very fast.

Just ordered a Spydie Endura 4 in the waved with full serrate., but I am sure they make the same knife in partial serrate. and without the wave feature. I believe this is in VG10 but the ZDP-189 sounds awesome, can that be got in a full serrate.??

You can get a fully serrated Cold Steel 3" (medium) Vaquero. Won't have the assisted opening, but a hell of a tough, sharp knife for the money.

Byrd Wings? One PE and one SE. 3 3/8 inch blade, 8Cr13MoV and pretty darn inexpensive.

Edit: By "one PE and one SE" I mean two blades in one package.

A full PE blade can be sharpened to a nice polish for push cutting etc, and the SE blade will tear through anything you need.

I do like the looks of the Ontario Rat 1.(I HATE the black painted version, however). Anyone have real world use with this knife?

If you had a spyderco before you need to try one again, a lot has changed.

Just look through the different modles and find the one you like, then come back and ask our opinion of the knife.

Your standard good choice are the delica, endura, caly 3, paramilitary, basically to many to name, spydero seems to bring out a new knife or two every month.

So far I am looking at the Kershaw Blur, Spyderco Delica and Endura, Sog Trident and the Ontario Rat 1 folder, not necessarily in that order.

Any other similar partial serrated folders?

I'm kind of new to the forum, but I don't think an EDC is going to do what you want. I EDC a kershaw leek partial serrated, very thin, smooth, comfortable. I have a full serrated Sypderdo delica thats not bad to EDC but not at comfortable (to me) as the leek. I have a G10 s30V leek and a small beretta harsey with G10 and also S30V. The G10 is great to hold but tough (for me) to put in and take out of my pocket. I also have a kershaw tyrade and the larger beretta that are wonderful knives, but I could not see using them as EDC.

I would suggest looking at the kershaw leek and sypderco delica for EDC for common task and light duty camping
