My wife was just complaining about her spyderco jester coming open on her keyring. I've never had this problem with mine, but I thought I'd check with you guys if there is a small slipjoint around that has a lanyard ring, and is appropriate for keychain carry. Of course, I figure it will stay closed tighter than the jester. Ideally, I'd like to avoid Case knives, I'd like something with some halfway decent steel, like ATS34 or maybe D2 or whatever. Just not any 440 or 420 or the like.

How much are you willing to spend? I only ask because apparently from your stated requirements you have very specific needs in steel and that very much narrows the selection..

I don't know. $50 tops.
BTW, the jester is a lockback.
Can you confirm this one stays closed tighter?

They don't have super-steel, but how about a nice SAK? IMHO, you can't find a much better keychain knife than a Victorinox Classic or Executive (if the Classic is too small), or one of the wicked Wenger SAKs that are between the Classic and Executive in size (I like small Wengers better than small Vics).

I'll second a small sak. A couple of Christmas's ago I gave one to all the female and non-knife people as stocking stuffers. They were a big hit, especially with the women who loved the little sissors and nail file on the classic.

Other than your steel specs you listed, I was also thinking a sak. Silver alox Classic is what is on my keyring.

When it comes to keyring knives, the handle is what really takes a whooping. The SAK alox classic is about the only keyring knife that has held up well for me. The Alox cadet would be a good choice too, if size isn't an issue.

$50. bucks tops for D-2 or ATS-34.. I don't think so my friend. You may be best off going for a nice SAK or Leatherman.

Just as case in point, below is my daughters edc.. $99.+ tax

Which is actually pretty ridiculous. The same can be had for a larger tactical knife (okay, maybe not D2, but it's not an expensive steel). I guess I'm asking for what is outside of the standard market.

That's very nice looking, although my concern would be the durability of MOP on a keyring over time. Between the banging against the keys & dropping them on the ground at times, my thought would be to go with a different handle material. MOP is beautiful, but I wouldn't want it on a $99 keyring knife. Just my $.02.

Good Point!. This photo was taken about 3-4 mos. after my young daughter was actively EDC'n the knife. She has a very nice purse that pretty much protects the knife on a every day basis. My point with 'Walking Man' was to inquire if his spouse was really the steel connaisseur that he is and the rest of us knife knuts are??!.
