any recomendations? i tried a search here but came up empty. prefer a new one over a "vintage".

how are the gerber or glock tools? a military type would be fine, i like the way the fold up.

I used to think that the folding shovels wouldn't hold up, but after carrying one in the Army (infantry) , I found that they work very well, and I never had a problem with one (I got to use these alot, and I didn't always like using it, lots of foxholes...lol), they even have an edge that could be sharpened for light duty chopping. Overall, a tough tool, and they don't take up to much room. Gene

I was looking at the U-dig-it tool, so, you think it is a good tough tool? I was really interested when I saw its wieght. Looks like a good small tool that could fit in a pack easily.

I have a WWII folding shovel that I've used since I was a kid !! My truck shovel is a Glock which also has a saw in it and folds up compact. Both work fine.

These aren't bad for the price I gave one to my kid bro about ten years ago its been used pretty hard by him and the kids for digging cat holes to lite wood chopping not as pretty as it once was but still working

I have one of these too, I like the way the handle can be replaced easily. I was showing it to a buddy once and threw it at a pecan tree, it stuck like a knife, the look on his face was priceless.

I used to have a "Walther survival tool". Folding shovel/pike, with a handle that can be unscrewed and converted into a knife or saw. I gave it to my brother, who uses it on camping trips. No complaints.

i checked rei, dont know why i didnt think of that earlier. thx!

they have a military style etool and the udigit thing. ill have to drive over there and check those out.

thx for all the ideas guys!

glock E-tool is cool

I have had a Glock E-tool for quite some time. It is a good tool, but I have always been aware of how I was using the tool, so as not to put 'undue' stress on the joint where the spade folds. For digging latrines it's awesome. It is handy in the winter, too, although it doesn't have a ton of capacity for moving snow. And I've used the saw in the handle on a number of occasions with good results.

Now, if I carry a shovel-type tool, it is a Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel. It is sturdy. It digs well and also chops. And it's fun to throw every now and then!

Their Spetznatz shovel works great. Sharpen the edges with a file and stone and you,ve got a chopping tool and a pretty lethal weapon also. Make sure you get the sheath or make one. Dangerous to carry all sharpened up like that. I got an original Russian Army surplus one and the fit and finish and quality of the steel on the Cold Steel was much better.--KV

I bought a Swiss Army shovel with belt sheath for $10 from Cheaper Than Dirt some time ago. It is extremely well made tool and good company for my SAK's

I got a scaled down (child size) D-handled shovel from Wal-Mart for around 7 bucks. It doesn't fold, and it's not cool looking, but it'll strap to a pack just fine and outdig any fancy e-tool. It's american made, thick steel. I forget the brand. I'll find it tommorrow and post.

I've trained with experienced Russians (some former Spetz) and they can do amazing things with these shovels (throwing, fighting, etc.). I have a couple and they are very useful, much more than you you'd think with the short handle.
