Wife got a new vehicle with less space than her previous. Now I am looking for the smallest NOAA Weather radio that will "free play" or work off a 12 volt vehicle battery charger. Any suggestions?

Quiet Bear,

Me too, I have been looking for a very small weather/fm radio for my pack.

While I don't have the answer, I can tell you that the Eton Mini does not tune in weather channels. I have a cheapo Coby pocket radio that does, along with FM and some TV. I have seen a couple of the FMRS radios that got weather, if that does you any good.

Something to ponder...have you considered becoming a Ham...then you can have a small handheld weather radio that doubles as a source of communication in an emergency or for EDC (carry & communication)

Each member of my family carries a small handheld Ham radio with them as an EDC. Each vehicle has an antenna for extra reach/reception. Just a thought...We have a base station at home and with the Internet using Echo Link which allows us to communication further than line of sight on a 12 v car battery.

I saw one at Walmart today. It was orange and their survival brand. Although, now that I think about I dont know for sure if it had NOAA.

Oregon Scientific makes smallish NOAA Radios. I have one I bought from REI for around $40. Runs on 3 AA's. I believe I found a newer model at Target in their outdoor weather products section.

I have a small one that is AM/FM/NOAA that I picked up at Target around Father's Day. It works great and was only $10...I cannot find it at the moment, but I will try to post some manuf. info.

I bought a little carabiner radio at Walgreens that had NOAA weather stations. It was cheap -- real cheap (volume is "low" and "high") but it was autoscanning and did pick up NOAA stations...

It just stopped working one day and I tossed it... haven't been able to find them since. In retrospect I should have saved the board and just used a tic-tac container to house it to pick up NOAA stations.

I bought a pair of Midland GXT600 GMRS radios from Sportsmans Guide. They have weather radio built in where you can tune to the NOAH channel for forecasts plus they have an alert feature for weather alerts.

The sell this one at the "Shack". Looks like a pretty small size:

I shopped around for a while for the same thing. I found this and it fits my needs as a small pack radio. The key is that it receives weather (as well as am fm and TV) and it has a built in speaker. The speaker is just loud enough that a few campers sitting around a picnic table or campfire can hear music or news. Its not the toughest piece of gear, but I got a small PDA case for it and it stays in my pack. It is expensive, but I decided it was worth the money for what needed.
