Hi All!

Recently sold off a bunch of stuff, thinned the heard, and am now trying to update my EDC as intentionally as possible. I have four spydercos that I pocket carry, and am planning on adding a small to medium fixed blade for my edc bag for those moments when I don't want to use a folder for something.

Right now I'm very torn between the BRKT Trailmate and the Pro Scalpel 2, both in s35vn, both in desert ironwood.

Anyone have any experience with either knife? I'm have a TOUGH time deciding so I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who could push me in one direction or another.

Thanks!

I don't have any experience with either of them, but I do have a Bravo EDC. Its a great little blade, I recommend taking a look at it. Good luck, with Bark River you really can't lose either way!

I had the Scalpel 2 and picked it up because it is a thinner blade. The overall size was about perfect for my small to medium hands. The grip felt great. The only thing I didn't really like was the over all ergonomics when placing the knife edge up. It wasn't that big of deal though. I think I would have actually liked it more if there wasn't such a curve to the knife and the overall body was a bit more straight.

As for the trailmate, Ive never owned one. It looks to be a great knife, but I like to use my thumb on the spine and Im not sure the ramp would line up well when using it for straight down push cuts.

I 2nd looking into the Bravo Edc but the hunter rampless model. I had the clip version with a ramp and it is a wonderful size but the ramp was annoying imo

A couple comparison shots to help.

I own 2 Trailmates and use to own a Scalpel II. I sold the Scalpel II.

Buy them both. They're two different styles of knives and they're both great.

As someone who's owned both, if I could only (hypothetically, of course) afford one, which one do you think would be best as a back-up, dirty-job alternative to a folder in an edc kit?

I have the Pro Scalpel 1 which I find an excellent small knife for pack or pocket carry. It whittles, cuts firesticks, food-prep etc so it's very useful.

This version is in tool-steel A1? carbon, forget the correct name but it's not stainless. Keeps a grand edge, very good in the hand when wet, will not slip at all.

As this is the Traditional forum, it's shown here with a GEC 83 lockback, about the same size open.
