Hey Guys and Gals.I'm looking for a 3 foot length of Schedule 40 Stainless Steel Pipe ,14" diameter. 310 would be great, but any grade will work. Anybody got a line on some? It is the last thing needed for my new Stainless forge.

Stacey,

Might be able to find some 12 inch. I bought a pieces couple of years ago and the fab shop may have another piece. Don't know what the content is but it was fairly cheap. I'll check tomorrow.

Heck I was just looking at your local. Could not get much further away. Have you checked out the Navy Yard????? They have the stuff all over the place. I made my first forge at an Naval Air Station and found some pipe laying around and the guy gave it to me. Then I tried to cut it with a torch, Had not Idea what I was doing back then:confused: . Turned out to be SS, 316 even. went back and the guy gave me a chunk of Mild:D . Cut much easier..

Most folks that play in that field would take a piece of plate stock and roll or brake form it into a pipe then weld the seam.

Don't let the welded seam bother you because all large diameter SS pipe is welded.

Thanks George,I have considered having a metal shop roll it and weld it.I was hopping someone had seen a piece in their local scrap yard.

Chuck, 12" would do,I might have to reduce the muffle size.
It is nearly impossible to get anything from the Navy anymore, what with the security and all.

The shipping would kill you but try Simmonds Surplus in Miami.. Stainless is all they do.
Use a low carbon like 316L or 317L for your forge....it's the only way to go when exposed to that much heat

Stacey,

Dominion recycling on Pembroke Ave has just about anything your evil heart desires. Tell Tommy I sent you. He's the yard boss.

If your still struggling to get some pipe you may want to try large boring companies. I got my stailess pipe as an off cut for a carton of beer.

The company relined large diamiter bores by puting in 10 or 12 inch stainless and super presurising it to expand it. To far away to help from here but may be a local. May be cheaper/ quicker to pay for new but I am a scrounger by nature. I don't count the cost of looking and driving around because I am only a hobby maker.

Since the BF was down,I had nothing to do Saturday but go to the recycle yard.I got 250 pounds of stainless and 180 of mild steel. The stainless was $1/lb. and the mild was 30 cents/lb.I found a 5' section of 312 stainless, schedule 10, in 14" diameter.I got enough 1" thick flat bar in mild steel to make six sets of dies for the hydraulic press.and enough extra stuff for several projects.
This new forge (all stainless) is going to be a monster.

Stacy, I know it's too little too late, but if you need another piece for whatever reason, I have a friend that has a 43" long piece of 12" diameter Sch.40 (5/16" wall) that he wants $480 for... I was told it would be ideal for a salt pot, too. He's a stainless steel fabricator, so if you need it modified or welded in any way, he's up to it.
BTW, I'd love to see your plans, as this is what I'll be using for my forge, too!

When I start putting it together I will take lots of photos. The plans will be posted ,too.
