Hi all,

I'm new here so i apologise if i am in the wrong place. I know we have many great knife makers here and i was wondering who the general public would recommend for a custom Bowie knife at around the $250 - $400 mark. I'm new to the Bowie scene!

Thanks in advance!

I just finished a big bowie from laminated steel with wrought iron s-guard. It was sold... but it's on my website. I had so much fun making it, I would love to have the opportunity to make another.

Can you give an idea of what you're looking for in a bowie - such as your preferences in terms of:

1) dimensions
2) stainless steel / stock removal versus carbon steel / forged
3) handle materials

Or maybe post up some pics of bowies you like regardless of price, so we have an idea of what you like?

Our annual "Best Bowie" thread will be happening very soon and should provide you with lots of eye candy and lots of inspiration for a bowie wish list.

You can review a few of the old threads below at your leisure:

As there are thousands of custom knifemakers creating fine knives in an abundance of price ranges, I recommend you narrow your search to those who can build you a nice bowie within or near your quoted price range.
Here's a quick list of knifemaker's websites (in no particularly order) who meet your criteria. They all make fine knives and will treat you right.
I would check out the sites, narrow the list down to 3-4 whose knives speak to you and then contact them individually.

This is BY NO WAY a complete list just a few makers off the top of my head to give you a start. I hope I don't anger anyone for leaving you off the list.

If you need any additional help, or information on particular knifemakers you can contact customknifecollectorsassociation@yahoo.com We have many members who know and have relationship with many knifemakers.

I hand forge knives. Meaning I make them with only charcoal and fire, shaped with nothing but a hammer. I take video's and pictures every step of the way to show the peice was truely hand made. I also before giving it to the customer. Hack a 2x4 in half 3 times, and shave my face\head\or leg to show it retains a razor sharp edge.

If your looking for a machine grinded or machine manufactured knife someone else may be of interest to you. If you want a 1 of a kind, durable, tough bowie that will be put to work I'm your guy. At your price I would make you a very large and durable knife from world known 5160 leaf spring steel. (This is metal that must be pulled from a vehicle and is NOT available anywhere else). Amongst knife makers it is arguably the best steel for a large bowie and is known for it's use by sword smiths. Holds a razor edge, and tough as tough gets! If you want silver inguts the price will be on your higher side in which you mentioned. If your not looking for an artistic peice, but all importance placed on the durability of the knife (I give replacements so long as I am alive!) then the price will be ranged around your lower end area. Wood handle, large bowie with hammer marks, and pictures and video's of the entire process every step of the way I will charge about 250$. This is a cost of a working knife and not something you put on your shelf and look at.

If you want silver inguts to go over the tang, rings over the handles, exotic wood, silver rings recessed onto the handle, and then the but cap pinged to hold the entire handle together (As they did in mid-evil days). The knife will cost at minimum 450$ with a 100$ of that 450$ as a deposit. (This is for the silver costs should you back out and I have to be stuck with such a fine metal).

Here is a picture of a knife not so artistically crafted, and not so much a bowie hand forged from a ROUND 01 steel bar that I would charge 160$ for. Bone handle. For this EXACT style, but in the size of a bowie.. I would charge you 200$. This is not a "Fancy" knife, but a work knife! E.g skin 20 buck's and it's still razor sharp!

-The black tar looking material is to emulate buffalo horn charcoal sap glue used by indians to seal and glue their arrow heads. The difference being this simulation art glue is at 3 ton epoxy strength! This is to make the knife look older, and also fits a usable purpose.
I sold this knife before they let me make the sheath for 125$ to a neighbor who absolutely had to have it. Otherwise I would price this knife at about 150$ with a sheath.

Here is two hand forged knives I am currently working on!

-These have not had a handle yet made for them. I am actually working on them today!

I will do a drop test to ensure the tip is very tough. An abuse test to show the blade retains a razor edge. As stated every step of the way will be pictured\video'd, and a video burned on a DVD of the entire process will be provided with the knife to retain a very high custom made value should you ever re-sale the knife to someone of interest.

The price escalates upon the artwork required for the handle. It so happens that aside of this being like a job to some. I have a OCD disorder, and manually hammering difficult metal into a weapon is like a calming drug to me. So I charge mostly for the artwork in the handle as others charge for the week\two weeks they spent in just hammering out the blade itself!

Not sure if this is the proper way to advertise or not but since a few others have chimed in I will as well. Here is a Bowie I recently sold on the forums for $285.I have a couple finished blades nearly ready to fit guards and handles on.If you are interested send me a Email and you can possible pick a handle material and guard material.

If this is not proper etiquette for this forum, someone please let me know.

Think of it as creating a "tool" instead. Your horizons will broaden. :)

Wow - thank you guys for the excellent responses. I will certainly review the websites given and also look at how i can narrow my searches. In the mean time i have purchased what looks to be a great blade off the knifemakers for sale area. I will certainly be in the market for more and there are some really excellent designs and artisans here.

Much appreciated to all that replied.

My favorite maker that frequents the forum is Ray Laconico. I purchased a really nice bowie made by Ray. He will occasionally have one in the for sale area by maker - they are usually in the price range you are looking at. Ray makes a very clean knive - I get one of his in the mail and can never find anything wrong or that I don't like.

CodyOebel - as shown here in your pics, your knives don't support your pricing. I can't think of a nicer way to say it.

No reason to say anything.Cody has been nothing but honest about his knives and methods.People will either buy them or not for whatever reasons they see fit.

Every one is entitled to have an opinion.

Some opinions are best kept to one's self

That's my opinion and I probably should have followed my own advice.

Best regards,

Paul

Just been reading this old post ( I have been looking for pics of Ray Laconico's Beauties ) and it just makes me so down to read other people putting others down!!! Madness man madness!!!:thumbdn:

Thanks for the inclusion, Kevin. That is my old Apple .mac address. They killed that service, so now it is just jmforge.com.
