Hi all: I have completed a few new restorations and thought I would ask the pros for some constructive feedback. I want to get better at this.

Nice work. Two more saved for future generations.

Tom

EDIT: After coming back for a second look...I personally would have hung the heads on both of these lower/closer to the shoulder.

You done good! If the head is on tight at the moment I would go with: "if it ain't broke don't fix it". Nice thing about leaving a generous amount of wood before the shoulder is that the head can be re-adjusted to set back further at a later date should the head work loose or some other calamity befall the current hang. It is typical though for aesthetics that folks (myself included) usually set the head closer to the shoulder first time around but this has nothing at all to do with strength or durability.

You can move the shoulder of the handle up as well as move the head down. I always reshape the shoulder any way.

The metal wedge is for spreading and securing the wooden wedge into the handle, not just to spread the handle. It should be driven at about a 45 deg angle across the wood wedge. this way it is less likely to split the handle. It forces the wooden wedge tight to the front and back of the eye as well as the handle. You can leave them out or if you chose to use them besure to go across the grain if the grain in the handle is off a little.
