Hi,
Anyone have some scrap leather that I could use for a strop?
What kind of leather should I be using for a strop?
I have looked around local for some but can not find any :(

Thanks,
pahl

Many people use old leather belts for a strop. Glue it down to a piece of wood, add some abrasive and you are ready.

Thought of that also, but I don't even have a old leather belt.
The only leather belt I have I still use daily :)
Should have kept some old belts around.

Will keep looking, thanks.

Sometimes you find old leather belts at garage sales and thrift stores. Not sure what they call the second-hand thrift stores in your area. I've seen them under the names Salvation Army, Goodwill, Deseret Industries, and St Vincent De Paul.

I use the rough inside of an old belt charged with Lee Valley blade honing compound, so tooled patterns on the outside of the belt are inconsequential to me. Some forumites use the smooth side of the leather without any abrasive as a final polish for edges, in which case you'd be looking for a non-tooled belt.

Pahl, you're in SOUTH DAKOTA! Skin a buffalo for the leather!!!

Thats harder then you would think. Do you have any idea just how fast they can run :)

Chase one of those speedy buffalo into a thrift store, look for old belts. Or chase an antelope into your local Wal-Mart, their crafts section sometimes carries Tandy leather scrap packages for $3 or so.

If all else fails, there's always Tandy

Thanks for the Tandy link.
When I was a little kid I got a leather kit for them for x-mas or something. Did not know they were on the web now, cool.
I also see most of the places that sell strops sell just the leather also.

Thanks for the help.
