looking for some knives for travel, so far I'm using a set of Byrd knives for international travels. (Meadowlark and Cara Cara).

Are there other knives cheaper that has the following characteristics?

1) one hand opening

2) clip

3) left side clippable or able to switch the clip to either side (I want to carry on the left side of the body as well as the right.)

thanks

david.

I'm partial to multi tools when abroad, particularly the leatherman wave. One handed opening, packs a wallop when held in your fist and tools to handle most survival tasks. No confiscations issues. Seen less of a threat. My ex went to Europe and was approached regarding the Spyderco Native I had given her (clipped in her pocket). I told her she was better off with the multi. Nonetheless, she talked her way out of it like she usually does. If it was me I would probably still be incarcerated ;-)

why would you change the clip position for the side of carry ?
anyway, boker has some interesting offerings, but you cant change the side of the clip
like boker trance, boker plus

These little (blades around 3 inches) folders from Ka-Bar have AUS 8 blade steel, carry left or right hand tip-up, and cost around 18 to 20 bucks. I've got one of them, and I've given two others away as gifts, and they're good knives that just happen to be cheap, not cheap knives that just happen to be good.

most knives' clips are set up for right side carry, I just prefer to carry on both sides. but being that left hand only knives are almost never seen anymore, I just go with the next best thing.

I do carry a multi-tool, usually a wave, but I'm thinking about changing to a fuse. I've not had any problems with knives being seen but just in case I want something that I won't mind oo much if I lose it.

Where in Europe?

BTW, I agree ..... when I travel I always pack a SAK or multi.

Be advised that anywhere in the U.K. France, and now Germany, a locking blade will get you more familiar with local authorities than you would like.

My favorite knives abroad are a Spyderco Salt I and a Vic Huntsman. That combo pretty much covers it all.

If you want to avoid hassles, stick with the Opinel/SAK kinds of knives. if you insist on tacticals, and you'll be going through different jurisdictions, see about getting a legal service on retainer. :)

Maybe a Spyderco Native?

Mine has the clip removed for pocket-carry, but you can adjust the clip for left or right carry.
And they are not too expensive (around $45.00 dollars at Walmart) should it get confiscated.

Good luck,
Allen

if the knife is concealed, you should have no problem...
ive carried blades from 3 to 4 inches delica, military, endura, some CS knives, and more, with no problems, but if you will need to use it in public, its better to have a sak/opinel/slippie also

But aren't Opinels locking folders?
As are some swiss army knives?

i meant they dont look that agressive to most people
if i use my sak soldier to cut something in public, it aint gonna be the same as if i draw and use the spyderco milie, which will get attention for sure
