The knife is my Tops Hawkes Hellion 2020 Survivor
Specs are as follows:
Blade Hardness: Steel 5160 RC 56 - 58
Blade thickness: 3/16"
Blade Coating: Black Traction Epoxy Hybrid (Powder Coat)
The blade is 9 inches total, 8 inches of working length; the handle is 5 inches.
As far as being a 'workable' blade goes, it will do the job and do it well. I've used this knife and it performs in every aspect of it's design. I also know that it has potential for being an even better blade. I was going to send it to Tops for a resharpen but they're the ones that put the initial grind on it that I'm just not 'thrilled' about. I asked the company what angle the blade is at and they told me it'd be between 20-25 degree overall angle....They said they can't guarantee the angle because it's done by hand so that was a little disappointing as far as the 'quality' of knife being provided but for the price it really is a bargain knife. I can't say one bad thing about it. It's just that since I've decided to go to the 'next level' with my sharpening skills I've noticed that the angles on the knife are wrong in my eyes and I'm at no where near the skill set to work on a knife of the size with the current stone stock in my inventory. Since this knife is going to be put into some rigorous use within the next couple of months I would like to have it operating at full potential.
Since this knife has a scandi grind with a recurve I'm trying to find someone that can put a set angle on the knife of exactly 25 degrees for the first angle and 20 degrees for the second bevel for the straight edge. I'm going with these angles because the field sharpener I have has 20 degree angle guides. I'm also looking for a VERY high quality job. I would like a mirrored polish on the knifes angles. If you or someone you know is able to perform this task please feel free to entertain me with the recommendation of the Professional Knife Sharpener. Also, could you please show some pictures of previous work. Thank you all for reading this and hope you all have happy trails this weekend.
