Hello!

I had a Commander, but didn't like wide blade and wave occasionally failed. Then tried mini CQC7 tanto wave, and it was really nice, had to part with it. After that carried mini CQC8. The handle was not that comfortable -- main problem was that finger guard is too far away from the blade and the actual part where you hold it is a little short.

So, I'd like some suggestions with the following as inputs:

  • a regular blade shape, not tanto;
  • ergonomic handle, at least 4.3" of holding part;
  • not heavy.

Maybe Journeyman, Gentleman Jim, or other?

Thanks a lot!

The 15 and min15 get you closer to the cutting edge than any other Emerson, and both the Journeyman and GJim are also very good in that regard, the Jim being "stabbier". I also love both the Tiger and the Combat System Fighter's proportions.

I just got a journeyman, and this is the best Emerson design in my opinion. Maybe not the coolest looking, or most pocket friendly in the Emerson line, but a blade shape that's super easy to sharpen, an extremely comfortable handle, not to heavy and big enough to do just about anything you'd need.

A regular sized CQC7A or 7AW will give you the feel of the 7B that you liked and a spearpoint blade instead of recurve or tanto. The handle is almost 4.5" and nearly all of it is usable.

I love the handle on the GJ, but tend to carry my 7 A-W more.

Dang. Now I've got to get a CQC10. :o
I've got a Traveler on the way but I really think the 10 would have been the better choice.

I've handled several models and didn't really like any of them for the reasons you listed OP. The journeyman however, is about perfect for me.

Not too heavy, very useful drop point blade, and extremely comfortable handle for larger hands. Only thing I don't like about it is the chisel grind.

ETA:
I shouldn't have posted here. I was going to sell the journeyman but just talked myself into keeping it...

Since you loved the Mini CQC-7, but prefer a different blade, then the Mini CQC-7A with spearpoint blade may be for you.

Before I forget, you might consider the A-100, with a 4.8" handle, spear point, and technically discontinued since last June, but many still available for sale at many web stores to include Emerson; this is Ernie's first "tactical" folder.

"It is the 'Father' of all my tactical designs. In fact it might be the 'Grandfather' of all tactical knife designs that now exist."

Thank you for advice.

I definitely will try Journeyman. As to A-100, let me think how much I need wave ;)
