Shopping for my first hawk (long-time functional axe guy), and came across the beauty of the RMJ Jackal.

Well I can't find it for sale anywhere, not that I could swing the $400 price tag ANYWAYS. I'm looking for a shorter handled hawk, with a lightweight head for self-defense and concealed carrying. What really turned me on to the Jackal was the head that was sharp all the way around. Not sure why the top of the head is sharp... but I love that the hook under the blade is. I've had training with knife combat, so all the hooking and grabbing tactics and moves done with a knife would seem to be served well by having that portion of the axe sharp. (That was hard to put into words.)

Anybody know of an axe with similar qualities, but completely dissimilar price tags?

That's not an RMJ. It's made by Omnivore Bladeworks, which you can google, although the price tag is still similar...a little less. As for your pursuit, look at the new CRKT tomahawks. There is a thread here on them. They were designed by RMJ, and are made by Colombia River Knife and Tool, and one seems to have all the features you are searching for.

Cashmore is correct, on both points. It seems to me that the new CRKT tomahawks are the best bang for your buck, in the integral hawk class.

You should still check out the Omnivore offerings, they look very functional, and the sheaths are quite unique.
