Looking for specific knife...

I am looking for a folding knife, but I have very picky guidelines!

This is what I want:

$200 or less
3 - 4 inch blade
No low luster or nonreflective finish (I want it shiny!)
Half serrated
One handed opening
No Spyderco style thumb hole
No locking liner! I want a lockback or some type of proprietary patented lock (AXIS, Wave, etc.)
No G10 or similar gritty textured handle
Ambidextrous opening, reversible pocket clip
Not a tanto, don't want a secondary point

To sum it up... I'm looking for a knife in the style of a Cold Steel Voyager, but with an ambidextrous AXIS or Wave type opening and reversible thumb clip.

Does such a knife... exist?!

have you done a search at all? I really love my Ritter Mini-Grips, I believe that it would fit the bill.

Yes I have, it is very hard to find a knife that specific! I searched Benchmade site, Spyderco, Kershaw, Al Mar, AG Russell, and Emerson.

Benchmade Ares. I highly reccomend this knife. It fits all your criteria, except for the fact that it has a G-10 handle. The handle doesn't have a gritty texture though, like Spyderco G-10. It is smooth. Ambidextrous axis lock, left/right moveable clip, less than $200, 3.6" blade, and you can get it with a satin finish or a coated finish, and half serrated or plain.

Only problem is they are kind of hard to find, although the combo edge is easier to find, and that's what you're looking for. If you keep checking eBay you should find the exact configuration you want eventually, otherwise I think some online vendors still have some configurations in stock.

Does the Ares come without a finish so that it can stay shiny, and where can I buy the Ritter minigrips? Any other knives out there?

The Al Mar Eagle Ultralight sounds very close, but I don't think it has ambidextrous opening.

Though I guess you would call it a tanto, this knife doesn't have what I would call a secondary tip. The knife I am speaking of is the SOG Vision. It has the Arc-Lock, dual thumbstud, reversable clip, titanium handle and the blade is half serrated. The blade is 3.75 inches, but I am not sure that you would call the finish really shiny.

Spud8, I got a Benchmade Ares with a customized handle (nice rounded ironwood handle) for $150. One of the best buys in my life. Mine has a shiny blade.

I got it from Oupa over at KF.

Benchmade Ares- definately the way to go, mine is the combo, The "Eishwitz" collaberation( probably misspelled) but unfortunately I left it on the kitchen table when I left home. However, my brother -in -law found a Benchmade Ares on the kitchen table the day after I left and it is now his EDC. He is a roofer and uses the knife hard, and it has held up for over a year and is still going strong. He sings the knifes praises to whoever will listen, so I never asked him to hand it over. It is good to see someone use a good knife so much. You could do worse than to seek out an Ares.

I hope you find what you are looking for. Does the Benchmade Ares seem to fit the bill? DO let us know what you decide on, please.

The Ares doesn't work for me, still don't like the weight of G-10 or the satin finish.... BUT the Eagle ultralight looks great to me, and I wanna check out the Ritter Minigrip... is the minigrip an abbreviation for mini griptillian, or is it a different knife entirely? Also, where can I actually find a minigrip?

The Ares only comes in Benchkote now, I believe.

Have you looked at the BM 520, 551, Rittergrip, 707, 940, 960, 14210, HK34; Al Mar Falcon, Eagle; SOG Elite, Trident, Flash?

I left out framelocks, but that opens up a lot more.

I happen to REALLY like the RSK Mini-Grip, as it is the perfect size for EDC for ME. Do check out the link provided for where you can get an RSK Mini-Grip.

The knife is not that heavy. It will definitely feel more substantial in the hand than a Griptillian. Also, G-10 is a very lightweight material..

or the satin finish....

A satin finish is shiny, so I think you're just getting your terms mixed up here...

Also, the Ritter Grip has a stonewashed finish, which is even less shiny than a satin finish.

The Ares doesn't "come" in anything anymore, all versions are discontinued. If you search hard enough, you can probably find any of the Ares variations, although some are harder to find than others.

Not ambidextrous.

You are going to HAVE to go to a custom maker and have someone MAKE you the exact knife you want.

my bad, the last ones I saw listed were all black combo edged, thought maybe they had left the one variant in production

Not ambidextrous.

well, he only specified ambi opening, not lock. I really only left them out because he requested no linerlocks, and some people feel the same about framelocks.

Oh yeah, I forgot to list the BM 530, and I have one myself :foot:

Ok someone please answer this question for me once and for all! This will make my choices multiply exponentially if this problem is resolved... and other threads I have started have not answered the question.

I have an Emerson CQC 8 that came with a satin finish, and I was under the impression that it would be "shiny." In reality the knife's satin finish was a low luster grayish color and not a shiny and reflective steel color like on my CS voyager. Thus, I am lead to believe that at least SOME satin finishes make the blade non-reflective and bland looking.

Now... the ultimate question(s)... do ALL satin finishes make the steel non-reflective, or only some? What is the difference between this mutlitude of satin finishes I am seeing, and how can I even tell which satin knife comes with which finish? If I want a shiny knife, should I look for blades with certain satin finish, or should I restrict my search to blades that either come unfinished or with a mirror finish?
