Hey guys, been lurking for a while and have recently taken up some outdoorsy activities where having good tools can be a big help. I've recently purchased a sweet flashlight (jetbeam M1X) and now I "need" a nice knife to go along with it.

I'm not sure what the knife may be used for (I don't know what may come up exactly) so a "general" purpose one may be my best bet here.

In looking at different knives I've come to like the spyderco brand. They seem to make quality pieces, have good prices, and use good steels.

However I'm open to suggestions...here are some criteria

Decent sized blade (3-4 inches)
Good steel (Such as VG-10 as I've read many good things about it)
Kinda a jack of all trades as far as cutting goes (since it may be used for much anything out in the woods/camping)
Price eh... $50-70 bucks if a decent knife can be had at those prices (which I think they can)

One in particular I like is the Spyderco Centofante, but again, feel free to suggest away. Thanks!

Centofante 3 and 4 are lovely, but keep in mind these are thin blades, meaning they are excellent slicers but not designed for rough "outdoorsy activities". I consider them more as urban knives.

I think that a simple but sturdy Delica or Native may suit you better, or perhaps a model from the Salt series which in essence will never rust.

It's hard to go wrong with Spyderco. Take a look at the Salt 1. H1 steel, very light weight. Blade about 3". I have one and really like it.

Also heard good things about the Tenacious.

The Centofante 3 is a great knife, and is tougher than it looks. But for outdoors use, I think the Stretch FRN would be better -- similar blade shape, a bit larger, with a grippier handle better for cold or wet conditions.

+1 for the H1 Salts also. You can get the fixed-blade Aqua Salt for under $70 at some places right now...

I started out with a VG10/FRN Delica a few years ago. Still a great entry level knife. Get the VG10/FRN Endura if you need a bit longer blade. A Tenacious sounds like a good choice from everything I've heard, but I can't speak about it from personal experience.

A bit more cash would get you a G10/S30V Paramilitary, the best GP Spyderco made IMAO. And have no worries about a "weak tip". I've never broken the tip off of any of my Spydercos. Even my garage beater is fully intact, just a bit dull and scratched up.

I have the Endura 4 , Plain edge. (kinda wished I got the semi-serrated) It has the VG-10, awesome steel for my uses. Holds an excellent edge. I use mine for everything. Inside, outside, work, Camping etc.... I would recommend the Endura 4, Semi serrated for a "jack-of-all-trades" Folder. Good grip, lightweight, and a good sized blade. AND Very reasonably priced Thats my 2cents.....

Now that I think about it, if you're willing to pay a bit more then the Spyderco Manix 2 is totally indestructible.

I have a Delica which is pretty beat up. It's served me very well.
Keep in mind that it's my only Spyderco so far (apart from orange Millie, which has taken the EDC slot for 2 weeks)

It isn't the best for carving and whittling as I find the serrations get in the way.

I would say from personal use an Endura 4 would be a good choice. If it's for outdoor use you probably want something a bit bigger than a delica. I also own the Tenacious and it is a VERY good knife as well. Although the steel quality is much lower than VG10 but you pay what you get for and more with the Tenacious.

Get a c10psbk. You will purchase other
knives but this endura will be an excellent
all around blade for you.

I would just start with either a delica or endura. Use the heck out of it. In a few years you'll know what kind of knife you like and what to look for for your personal use.

The Centofante is on special right now at knifecenter. Possibly the lowest price it's ever been. Has to be within 10% of dealer cost. I've you're giving it a look, act quickly. It's discontinued. Cheers.
