Looking for somewhere to do some heat treating of stainless steels. I just got a batch back from Peter's. They do a great job, but this batch had lots of heat treat marks on the blades and it took the better part of 8 weeks to get them back.

I use mainly AEBL, S30V, and want to venture into some magnacut.

Thanks!!

I have had Jarod heat treat a good number of knives for me, AEB-L (64RC for kitchen knives and 62RC for hunters) and he nailed the heat treat. He recently did a couple of K-tip kitchen knives for me in MagnaCut, came out exactly where I wanted them at 63RC. I can't recommend him enough. Family owned business.

I'm about to pull the trigger on sending some blades to him as well. I will say from my experience DONT send your blades to Tru Grit. Lousy service after calling them several times even speaking with their heat treater Jeff. I consider myself a patient person but they have been pushing me and I'm pretty frustrated with them now, but they practically stole my blades at this point. Every time someone brings up a HT thread now, it reminds me to call them back again 🙂. Until something is done with my blades I sent just about about HALF a year ago or if they would even at least acknowledge me as a customer, I will not recommend them.

I emailed Jarod a few days ago but still haven't heard back...

Heat you stainless in a gas forge until it sparkles and quench in water and it will perform just fine. (no temper needed)

Happy April Fool's to you too 😅

If I'm right, I think he just had the birth of his son? So I imagine he is up to his eyeballs right now. Give him some time, but It sounds like he's a good guy to deal with.

Yes happy April fools to everyone!

On a serious note.

Jarod will usually take a few days to get back to you because he’s extremely busy, and it is completely understandable, like Diego_B Diego_B said mostly because of the birth of his child (I will not go into any further details out of respect for him and his wife (though I don’t know very much)
But he try’s to shoot for a 2-4 week turnaround time.

Are there any heat treated that have a quicker turn around that a month? I'm looking for one right now, but there are only a couple that were recommended, and they all seem backed up. Probably for good reason that everyone goes to them, but still, I want to ask at least.

Bos got 23 blades in 5 different steels back to me in a month total turn around roughly, including shipping back and forth. If they are the same steel, it may be quicker at Bos or Jarod? Jarod is open for new orders now as well; he was listed as out of stock a few weeks ago when I checked last. Both places do excellent HT, Bos got the nod this time due to a very long blade that Jarod wasn't sure if he could fit into his cryo setup.

Really... I talked to Paul Farner on the phone a couple weeks ago about having a 17” overall kukri in 80crv2 heat treated he said it was to long and that he wouldn’t even be able to close the lid on his oven, so I sent it to JT instead.
So what’s the deal?

Stainless they can do up to 30" total length. Carbon, they are limited to 12" OAL. Sorry, should have said that in my post!

Why? I would think if anything it would be the other way around. Why can’t the oven that they use for stainless be used for simple carbon? Is it that the longer oven takes a little more time to get the blade(s) out and if it’s not an air hardening steel it would cool of to much before they got it to the quench tank?

Well, oil quench carbon has the 12" limit, so it may be their quench tank size/capacity or something? When they were in California, they couldn't do oil quench steels due to EPA stuff from California? I checked the email I got from Paul Farner a while back. Air quench limit 36" butt to tip; oil quench 12" butt to tip.

He made it sound like it was the oven.
I just would expect a professional heat treating service to be able to do blades longer then that. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It depends a lot on the regulations in the area and how they are set up. Bos has been doing HT for many many years for Buck Knives and custom makers and also many knife companies as well. They are one of the top in the industry if not the top. I would think if they could do longer oil quench blades, they would. OR maybe they are so busy with air quench steel blades that they don't have the time for the carbon side of things?
