Looking for suggestions and a simple question

Hi, everyone, new here.

1) I'm looking into buying a folder. I live in Chicago, IL and I've done my homework on the boards here with regards to my local knife laws. In short: max blade length of 2.5" and no automatics. I'm looking for something that I can open one-handed. Don't mind spending the money if the quality is good. Right now I'm leaning towards a Camillus SIZZLE. Anyone have any good recommendations? I think my requirements really narrow down the selection.

2) Finally, a question regarding the "clip" on most of these folders. Lets use the SIZZLE as an example. If I plan on storing the knife in my front right pocket (I'm right handed), then should the body of the knife be inside the pocket with the clip showing on the outside? Or is it the opposite with the body of the knife on the outside of the pocket? Or am I completely wrong and the clip is for like a belt or something? Stupid question probably. :p

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the welcome.

The main reason for the purchase is for work related stuff. A co-worker of mine owns a folder and it really comes in handy. I had originally put the word "protection" as one of the reasons for wanting to get one, but that's not the focus. I already regret typing it.

Any help on questions 1 or 2 would be greatly appreciated.

The Sizzle is a good knife.

The knife should be inside you pocket, with the clip on the outside, I occasionally see people wear it with the knife hanging outside their pocket, and it looks pretty dumb and is a great way to lose a knife. :D

Regarding clips, I think most clips are not designed to clip onto something as thick as a leather belt. It may work but I would never clip a knife to a belt. I only use clips on pockets and I keep the knife inside, clip outside. Good luck with your search.

Hey HARO...
You ended up here in the traditional forum, and our kind of knives generally do not have pocket clips. They are 'real' knives with heart and soul. Check out some of the pics here. Check them out at a good knife or sporting goods shop. A plus for these kinda knives... they are 'people friendly'... you pull one out at work and no one is afraid you're going postal or something. Tradional knives has a friendly look; it's what Grandpa carried. As a plus, most tradional pocket knives have more than one blade.

Good luck in finding just the knife for you.

Thanks for the info, guys!

"It's what Grandpa carried."

Haha, that quote alone paints a great mental picture of the kind of knives you are talking about. Must be the youth in me, but I wouldn't mind carrying something a little more hardcore looking. You are right about people at work though. Hopefully my search will uncover a nice happy medium. Spyderco has some nice "gentleman knives".

Don't sweat it, 'cause I'm a grandpa and my EDC (that's Every Day Carry in knifese) is a Kershaw Scallion. It predated the 'Sizzle', but has your clip, is an assisted opener and a great little very useful knife.

Have fun in your search and welcome to the forum. If you really want more info you might submit your inquiry to the General Knife Discussion. Although that may get you a couple hundred different suggestions, but that's a big part of the fun of knife discussion and collecting.

Good luck,

LANNY:cool:

I have a Kershaw Ken Onion 1550 Blackout AO. It's kind of a big brother, dressed all in black to the Scallion, Leek, and Chive. After more than a year with it, I love it. Based on that I imagine the Scallion would be a great choiice. You might want to see how your locale interprets assisted opening knives though. Some might wrongly consider it an automatic knife. Even if they are technically wrong in their interpretation you would be the one to suffer. Kershaw also makes some similar knives with manual one-hand opening which are also a little less espensive. I've always found Kershaws to be a good value for the money and have never been disappointed in the ones I've had.

To take advantage of the new while still having a touch of the traditional, at least in the look of the scales, I've been eyeing the Kershaw Splinter with Quince Wood scales. It and the Nakamura are darn pretty knives, even if they are stainless blades with one handed opening. At least the liner lock is similar to what my 1940T Schrade has.

Whatever you choose, good luck and enjoy. Just toss in a nice traditional along the way to go with it. Nothing wrong with carrying more than one knife. :D
