I'm in the market to buy a new pocket knife and I have always been partial to Buck. Can any recommend anything.

I'd like a single blade locking knife. Nothing too heavy and no plastic handles.
Nothing too small but not huge either.

Thanks for any replies

From your description, probably your best bet is the Buck 500 series. These have birchwood handle scales, nickle-silver bolsters, drop-point blades, and are lockbacks. They are sleek and fit well in a pocket without creating a bulge, also the bolsters are a bit rounded to reduce wear on the pockets. Their sizes vary, I have I think the #503.

I agree that the 500 series is ideal (especially the 501). If you want something a bit more modern, one of the new Lightning HTA models would be perfect. Instead of the older well-known lockback, you get a liner lock. These are available in various colors including a dark blue carbon fiber. Also, even more modern looking is the Odyssey. Some of these new models are available in ATS-34, others in the standard 420hc. Look at the Buckknives.com website and you can see pics and get more info. I carry an ATS-
34 Odyssey with the carbon fiber handle. It looks nice, is comfortable in my pocket and holds a fine edge. It is also very easy to touch up when I want to restore the edge to shaving sharpness. I probably would prefer the new 176CF because of the more traditional
blade shape but have not yet incorporated one as my daily using knife. I have to admit that the aggressive blade shape of the Odyssey causes some people to comment and/or
overreact when I pull it out to open something. Sadly, such is the world we now must live in.

I would agree that one of the 500 series knives should fit the bill for you. I personaaly like the 532 so much, i often carry one of them in my pocket. It might be a bit large for most folks although it is slim.

I second Joe's recommendation. The 532 is one classy knife. I routinely carry one of mine is a slip pocket pouch. It's slimness makes it's length seem smaller when carrying. I still think of it as a perfect "gent's" knife, especially with all the nice file work dressing it up.

Another big plus for choosing the current 532s is the fact that they are outfitted with BG-42 steel... a nice step up from the standard fare.

Oh yeah.... I got my 532/2000 with the Indigo Royalwood just yesterday. SCWEEEET little (or maybe not so little) knife. I highly recommend this one. I just hope that the 532/BG-42 doesn't end with the 532/2000's. Oh please, oh please, oh please!!!!

It is so nice that I had to really work to keep myself from turning around and immediately ordering a ... spare.... yeah, that's it, a spare.... in another color.

Adn Buck's Edge 2000 easily rivals, and maybe surpasses, the factory edge of all other folders I've gotten, even Spyderco.
