Looking for suggestions...

Hey guys, I'm looking for some suggestions for a new folder as I don't know where to start.
I typically carry traditional slipjoint pocket knives, and now I'm looking for something with one hand/assisted opening, pocket clip and a decent locking mechanism .

I do have some criteria, and what I don't want is an all black or o.d. green tactical looking knife, which seems to be a tall order these days.

Here are my basic criteria:

Any decent steel that's quick and easy to sharpen on basic stones. I'm not particularly picky, but if there is any stainless that exists that has similar qualities to 1095 that would what about perfect.

Around 3.5" closed length. Nothing too wide, like a Spyderco.

Wharncliffe or sheepsfoot blade, not too thick. Looking for something more fine cutting rather than sturdy.

Not picky with handle material; I like colorful G10, Wood would be my first choice.

Budget is $80, or thereabouts.

An example of what I like is the Kershaw Leek. This one is just about perfect, though mine is all steel construction which I don't care for. I'd love something similar with a sheepsfoot blade.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Carbon fiber Leek. CPM-154. $75-80.

This aftermarket clip rides deep and gives you access to the safety, if you're in to that sort of thing.

I hate it when I have no idea, but you got me with the wharncliffe or sheepsfoot blade. Now I have to THINK, darn you.

That ones in the list :) I just wish there were more colorful scale options, but that could be remedied with some aftermarket g10.

I do seem to be in the minority :D

Maybe the Spyderco Delica sheepsfoot? Colorful FRN scales, one handed opening, good steel, slim carry, customizable with aftermarket scales and clips, and a sturdy back lock.

3.5" closed is going to be a tough parameter to fill. There's a company that makes a lot of smaller one-handed knives with clips, but you've already crossed Spyderco off the list.

I recommend checking our Ruike. They have some nice offerings and use 14c28n as their blade steel. This steel sharpens easy to a nice sharp edge and holds it for decent amount of time. They also come way under your budget, the models I seen are in the 30-40 dollar price range.

- Salt 2 in Yellow
- Mini Grip with Blue G10 (A little above your budget but not too much)
- VDK Goat (A bit militar-ish I suppose)
- Steel Will Modus maybe still counts as Sheepfoot-y
Kizer's Tangram Line might have some Sheepsfoots too, I don't know off hand though.

Edit: Sorry didn't see the 3.5 closed requirement

I think the problem may be that you are a TINY bit too picky; the Busse MOAB fills almost all your requirements. ;) Otherwise, the Spyderco Delica Wharncliffe is the best I can find. DARN you. :p

It seems that I was too quick to rule out Spyderco; I'm liking the Salt series, and even some of the others that aren't exactly what I was looking for. I may have come here for one thing and leave with another, but so it goes with this addiction.

I'm liking the Ruike suggestion as well, I see a few that look about perfect.

I'm also tossing the 3.5" restriction, I was adhering to much to my penchant for slipjoints and that length doesn't seem practical with this type of knife.

The ruike p801 is a good knife for the money. ($30). 14c28n steel. It's not assisted but mine flips reliably

I would add that it's not really necessary for this type of knife. The Leek is ~4" closed. Half an inch here or there doesn't make nearly as much of a difference on a clipped knife as it does with a traditional knife.

Spyderco Centofante.
Thin Wharncliffe-ish blade with VG-10.

You may also find something you like in that size and price range in Kizer, Bestech, Mazerin, and Boker lines along with Ruike and Real Steel.

Great suggestions here, thanks guys.

I see a few that I'm interested in, but the Spyderco Salt 2 has made 1st place on my list.
I was initially averse to wide blades, but it dawned on me that I can still drop a slender slipjoint in my pocket to cover those more delicate tasks. Plus, there is something just so damn attractive about Spydercos designs.

My suggestion: Buy a Leek, then you'll be set and you won't need to spend all your money on knives ever again. Good luck.

That's mostly true, the Leek is all the knife would ever need for 99% of my usual tasks. But its the want part that complicates things :D
Right now I'm juggling the carbon fiber Leek and Salt 2. Not literally if course, that would be downright dangerous.

Too bad, I was looking forward to the video and the post in the OOPS thread. :p I have both and prefer the Leek; it does, however, have a very thin point which is IMO not very wharncliffyish (word?).
