My dad had a survival knife years ago and a family member lost it. I have been trying to find him another one. He bought it at a knife store in Gatlinburg 20+ years ago. He says it was a Jim Marta knife, but I can’t seem to find anything on that. Can someone help me out with this?

Can you be more descriptive of the knife? Some makers use very distinguishable features. But it could also have been some local guy that didn't make much and doesn't have much of a footprint. The more details the better.

From what I remember it was a combat survival with a hollow handle. Serrated edge, black handle and blade. Black sheath with storage pouch. That’s what I remember, he had it when I was young.

Are you talking about the old Marto Explorer survival knives?

like this?

They have been long out of production. You need to keep an eye out on ebay and other sites. You can google to find one, just use key words like; MARTO Explorer Survival knife, you might get some hits

Thanks so much for helping me find this. We both have been searching for a long time.

They show up on Ebay quite a bit, sometimes new in the box. It would take some work to find one with the extra deluxe pieces though. It came in two colors (black and silver), and two sizes (5 1/2 blade or 6 1/2 blade). Search under Marto Survival Knife or Marto Brewer Survival Knife.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Brewer-Carias - is the designer, he's a famous naturalist.

I don't think I'd bet my survival on that.
It was a solid well designed knife by a Venezuelan naturalist and explorer Charles Brewer and Marto of Spain. He has led over 200 expeditions into the interior of Venezuela and Guyana.

These haven't been made since the 1990s and prices for good examples are getting steep.
