I am looking for a custom leather sheath for my Battle Mistress. I'm looking for a sheath along the lines of Lile and Randall. I guess you could call it military styled with a pocket on the front. Any suggestions of makers would be appreciated.

Well, the obvious choice is Gary Graley, but he seems to specialize in sheaths more for folders. He has the skill to do what you are looking for, certainly. There are other custom leatherworkers, too. You can usually see ads in the back of the magazines, but Gary is definitely The Man if dozens of BFC member testimonials mean anything to you!

If you're ever up near Ontario Canada, you might consider John Freeman who did a great job on a sheath for my CS Trailmaster. I might ask him to do another for my BattleMistress - if it ever does arrive.

Thanks guys. I think I'll send Mr. Graley an email and see what we can come up with.

Gary did my 9.5 inch Lamey camp knife sheath with a belt loop swivel and vertical retention straps. Very sweet. Of course he's done a half of dozen of my folders, too.

He does truly wonderful work and is very reliable.

He's also very lucky at winning knife contests but I won't go into that....

Kodiak, do you have any way of scanning a pic of that big sheath? I have talked with Gary, and think he has come up with what I want.

Thanks Guys, but tknife I hadn't read this post till now and didn't know you were looking for the perfect sheath.
Mine are pretty good but I'd never go as far as saying perfect, and leather is leather.

I hope you have gotten in touch with other fellows like Tree Stump Leather, Kenny Rowe or those listed in the Knives 99 books, cause they do excellent work as well.

(not trying to downplay my work, but I want you to get what you really want)

G2

PS
I agree with Jim's comments below, it's a personal thing in regards to what some like and what others dislike.

My personal opinion is that you won't get the *perfect* sheath FOR YOU unless you design it (and if possible build it) yourself.

This isn't a slur on any of the craftsmen mentioned here. It's just that the peculiarities of your lifestyle, physical proportions, wardrobe, martial arts type, legal climate and preferred draw style make "off the shelf choices" suboptimal.

Failing that, any sheath that allows numerous mounting options, including different ride heights and/or switchable from vertical to horizontal as appropriate will be more likely to work out.

Here is the picture of the Matt Lamey Camp Knife sheath.....sorry about the picture quality but the sheath is done superbly

Here is another sheath G2 did for me. This is a handmade folder by Bill Winn in D2 steel, cocobolo scales and made in 83. My wife's name is Winn and we were married in 83 so I thought this knife would be cool to own. It is actually one of the best folders I have ever seen. The sheath work speaks for itself.

Those sheaths look really great! Gary, I think you are selling yourself a little short. Your work looks outstanding! Those look functional and sturdy just like I wanted. Thanks Kodiak! I'm sold.
